This is a nice walk. But the main reason people do this walk is for the views and reflections in the lake. I was told by a professional photographer that early morning and winter provides the best weather for it. The walk itself is ok and flat through the forest. We had a calm lake with no wind but we... Only by experiencing the tranquility of this place do you get the importance of those postcard photos of the mirror lake. It is a short walk but allow yourself some time to sit, particulaly at the refection island. No photo will ever do it justice so cherish the views and the mental image.

Arguably the most photographed scenery in NZ. The walk is likely good at any time of day but if the weather is nice and you can get there in early evening you stand a better chance of getting the "mirror image" shot of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman. We did not; however we enjoyed this hike immensely. It is a... More

Stopped for quick hike after Gillespies Beach and before Fox Glacier. Beautiful hike. Good hike for all ages and abilities. If there's any wind, you will not get the mirror effect on lake.

We started off just wanting to go a lookout walk but ended up doing the 90 minute loop around the lake, we got a beautiful sunny day. The track is fairly easy and absolutely beautiful scenery

The famous lake only shines when there is absolutely still water, which only happens at dusk. Otherwise, its just a lake and we have seen many more nicer lakes, less crowded! ;)

Did this walk on a lovely calm day recently. While the sought after reflection was not to be seen we still really enjoyed the very easy walk and the stunning views of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Finished with a light lunch in the excellent cafe. Great way to spend a couple of hours if you are in the Franz... More

A nice relaxed walk, we are probably on the slow side, taking our time to look at ferns, moss, lichen and such. Took us a little less than two hours. Unfortunately the low clouds meant that our reflection photos are of trees and misty skies, no snow covered peaks! Still allowed a cake at the cafe for our enthusiastic efforts.

We went mid-day and there was just a little bit of a breeze. Water was not calm enough to reflect the mountain range but still lots of great photos.

Everyone visits this lake to see a beautiful reflection of the alps and Mt. Cook in the water. We were hopeful as we were there on a sunny day with no breeze. After we made it to the viewing point it was disappointing that even though the conditions seemed to be perfect we did not get any photos of a... More
