this was a highlight of our trip. The seven hour walk up was challenging. But the hut is excellent and relaxing in the geothermal pools nearby, under the stars, is an experience we will always treasure.

Welcome Flats hut is a nice-looking, well-equipped backcountry DOC hut with a twist: natural hot pools nested in the middle of the Southern Alps! Time: 2 days return. Distance: 34 km return. An easy going, full day walk up Copland Valley, walking alongside the Copeland River to Welcome Flat Hut. Part of the Copland Track, the 17km tramp up to Welcome Flat takes you through native bush and follows the Copland River. The track is clearly marked, and well-formed with the major river crossings made via swingbridges (great fun!) as well as some more solid bridges.
