Always loved this wild beach...windswept, beautiful, often big waves. Popular with the fishermen in our family. My daughter lives there now. We all love Makara and its loving, caring community.

Very special place. Had the chance to get there on a nice sunny afternoon with light winds and it was fantastic. One scenic location after another. Didn't need to walk far from the beach to get to real stunning ridges. Will come back!

About 30min scenic drive from Wellington CBD will get you to a typical NZ stoney black sand beach, the highlight is a walking track around the cove with magnificent views. Take bush walking foot wear and a bottle of water, don't forget your camera.

A lovely peaceful stop on tour of North Island. It was windy when we were there and the waves were rough, but it was still a tranquil place. Coffee and a lovely welcome at the cafe.

Visiting Makara beach you'll be able to see wind turbines, rock pools and stunning sounds on the northeast of the south island. Should be visited on a clear day.

Lovely walk requires reasonable fitness to clamber over some of the rocks after a kilometre or so. It feels just a bit wild. I have walked along the coast then back along the track that is about 500m back from the coast that provided good...More
