Tucked into Wellington's bush-clad hills and up a hillside track is this simple memorial to those who died in Gallipoli with a poignant inscription by Ataturk Ataturk, the founder of the modern Republic of Turkey. Erected in 1934, it says, "Those heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives, you are now lying in the soil of a friendly... More

The Ataturk Memroial is located in Tarakena Bay and pays homage to the first Leader of the Republic of Turkey. The memorial was designed by Ian Bowman and is in a commanding postition overlooking Cook Strait. The actual location was chosen by NZ/Australian and Turkish because of the resemblence of the scenery to that of Gallipoli Peninsula. The memorial is... More

An escape from Wellington, around the bays, a short walk up, or a longer walk on Eastern Walkway. Great views of the bays

We came across the memorial quite by chance as we were walking on a trail in Miramar. This should be interesting for anyone intereted in the shared part of the history between Turkey and New Zealand. The view from the memorial is great.

Husband really wanted to see the Ataturk memorial ! We drove the coast road and saw it up a walkway up high ! So google maps took us back half way to town to find the upper carpark - be warned it is quite a hike to the memorial and not wheelchair friendly- took us 25 minutes but husband is... More

Great walkways all around this area. On a clear day you can see to the South Island. I walked here from Bowes Cres where there is a small carpark. It would be less than a 1 km walk from there on a gentle incline. There is also a dog walking area too.

This was my first visit to this memorial and only found out it was here after going for a walk on the Breaker Bay hills! It's a very tranquil location with absolutely panoramic views over the Wellington Heads and Barrett's Reef where the Wahine foundered in 1969. You can watch the Cook Strait ferries coming and going as well as... More

Nice 5-10 minute hike from the parking area. Not as good of a view as from Mount Victoria. It is also often windy on this side of the city. However, it offers great views and the coastal road to get to here even more scenery. Following the story of the site afterwards helped me to learn more about the history... More

This Memorial is so surprising in its utter simplicity and well worth a short climb. Very thoughtful place and the view entices you to stop and take time for thought. Its wonderful and we have been there a few times.

There is a car park at the bottom and a walking trail to get to the top of the hill where the monument is. The walk is short and challenging (10-15 minutes) but once you get to the top the views are absolutely outstanding. On a good day you can see across to the South Island. There is a great... More
