I work in a Botanical Garden so I was very interested to see what this was like. It is a beautiful, sprawling garden with winding paths down a hillside. We particularly enjoyed the Rose Garden, visiting on Mother's Day with many families visiting and having brunch in the beautiful outdoor cafe. Great coffee and yummy food. The gift shop in... More

A lovely afternoon comes by taking the cable tram up to the top of the hill from downtown Wellington and then walking back down to the city center through the Botanic Garden.

People with limited time or limited toleration for hilly paths might choose to visit Otari-Wilton's Bush Garden instead. Its garden section is more compact and is tightly focused on New Zealand native plants rather than the more diverse and scattered features of the main Botanic Garden, spread out over a hill. The Botanic Garden has something for everyone, from a... More

Arrived by tour bus to this obviously popular destination. The cafe/restaurant trying to service the large crowd but not really succeeding. With limited time you had a choice to do a rushed mini tour of the pretty gardens, or get in the mile long line to to toilet, or in the mile long line for food or a coffee. Certainly... More

A short ride on the cable car and your at the top of botanical gardens. You can either walk back down to the city or take the cable car. The views along the way are brilliant.

We walked down through the Gardens after getting off at the top of the cable car ride. We didn't walk all the pathways but did about half of them. Unfortunately had some rain. Some parts are quite steep either going down or up so might not be suitable for all. Got in out of the rain by stopping for coffee... More

Take the tram up and take your time walking down! A pleasant and relaxing way to spend some time enjoying the views from the top of the hill and the beautiful gardens below. Stop in at the café near the rose garden for a chance to sit and have a cup or a bite to eat. Definitely more enjoyablewhen the... More

After the hustle and bustle of Wellington it was a delight to experience the peace and quiet of these beautiful gardens. Set high above Wellington the gardens allow a good panoramic view of the city and are set out beautifully.

The Wellington Botanic Garden is a nice place to visit with several walking track routes. The common one is to ride the cable car to the top and then walk back along the standard track to the bottom and back into the town. It's a nice half hour walk that's pretty much all downhill.
