ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

Zealandia is an enormous wildlife sanctuary of bushland in the suburbs (Kelburn/ Karori) pretty close to downtown Wellington (you can walk there, using the cable car, if you know where you're going). Becasue it's been fully fenced with a specially designed fence that keeps out...More

Extremely knowledgeable staff who were all helpful and happy to answer my idiot questions! I was loaned a mobility scooter which was so very thoughtful. Lots of birds but not always easy to see them.

We did a guided day tour of this preservation area, which we highly recommend. The sanctuary can be reached using a free shuttle that runs from downtown -- and comes back until 5:00pm. Our guide was amazing. Roy has been incredibly knowledgeable and affable. The...More

This is unlike any zoo anywhere. Instead of having caged animals on our land, Zealandia is a massive fenced in area (over 550 acres) that we humans enter to experience the wildlife in their natural habitat. There are well marked trails and a hike to...More

Very good morning looking at some interesting plants and animals. Great to see such conservation so close to the city and the care and dedication that is put into it. Great fun trying to glimpse some of the rare beasts that call Zealandia home!

A very well run wild life and sanctuary in Wellington giving animals and birds to enjoy in a safe and well kept natural environment. The guides are very helpful too if you need them. The trails are well maintained. However, a little more directional signs...More

Amazing night tour a week ago. Guide was very knowledgeable and found us a kiwi. The kiwi and the glo-worms were a real highlight. Also took an international delegation on an afternoon guided tour this week. Once again the volunteer guide was a font of...More

Zealandia wants to protect native birds from the very many mammalian predators. It also wants to educate visitors about this issue. The birds will buzz you.

I love the ability to walk amongst the native bush and see many varieties of New Zealand birds and of course the tuatara. You can spend an hour or two or most of the day and there is so much to see you wont regret...More

Yes, you could still go if raining but would advise being dressed for the conditions as it is very much so being in nature. Expect that it will be muddy as well.

Wandering by yourself in the park should give you access to all of the same places, I think. About the kiwis: They are definitely only active at night, but if you don't want to go on an evening tour, you might want to try... More
