ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington...

ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

Zealandia is an attempt to recreate the mammal-free native environment that existed in New Zealand before the arrival of humans. We did the night tour with an enthusiastic guide named Johannes. We learned an incredible amount about the native flora and fauna of New Zealand, and saw several exciting and rare species. We did not see the Kiwi or Kaka,... More

You can catch the free shuttle bus from outside the I-Site in the city and it takes you straight to Zealandia in about 15 minutes. Super easy. Once there there's a fantastic gift shop and cafe before you head into the sanctuary. The sanctuary was lovely, huge place with lots of things to explore. We took our bird spotting spot... More

We visited the Zealandia with a group and spent the afternoon outside watching birds. We were accompanied by two lovely ladies who guided us through the park. We were lucky to spot some very nice birds and to make some excellent photos of them. Very relaxing activity !

We are birders, so we were carrying binoculars. As with any destination involving a single visit with an intent to see birds, we knew there was a chance that we may see few birds or none. However, we were fortunate to see several birds during our afternoon visit. It may have helped that there was no wind. It sprinkled a... More

The night tour was amazing. The guides are friendly helpful and so knowledgeable. We had the honour of seeing eels, weta, glow worms, various birds and a kiwi. The guides explained the whole journey with such care and passion that the time just flew. Can not recommend it enough !!!!!

This park is a pleasant walk very near the city but is lacking in the promised wildlife. We only saw some kaka when they were feeding and a duck! Quite expensive for a walk.

Visited recently for an afternoon. The main path takes about an hour or so to walk around. Very scenic, and I did see some of the birds but not as many as I thought I would/could. Worth doing, but don't imagine you will be surrounded by exotic birds constantly!

The place get s a three star rating just for their vision and dedication to replenishing populations of endangered native species, primarily of birds. I specifically did the night tour hoping to get a look at a kiwi and other nocturnal creatures. We were given flashlights with red filters to help spot animals - but ours were so weak, I... More

This is a stunning bush setting reclaimed as a bird sanctuary. I was surprised how many birds we did see and up very close! Nice walking tracks and views from the dam wall. Very nice gift shop - best I saw in Wellington (much better than Te Papa, which used to be great) We caught bus up the hill &... More
