The garden is a bit sparse in Winter but the giant Rhododendrons are out - they are huge and so worth coming to see. They take this "off season" to re-do paths etc so it's not so easy to get around and the cafe is...More

Thanks for your review. Glad that you generally enjoyed the place. The cafe will be opening on Fri, Sat and Sun through September and then back to 7 days a week from 1 October.

Well worth visiting for a walk through the beautiful gardens around the lake. Wide, easy paths, lots places to stop and take a moment, ver yattractive, and a dog friendly venue. There is a café; we didn't eat there but it looked very nice.

Hi, I think you must be talking about Pukekura Park. Pukeiti is about 20 minutes drive from the edge of New Plymouth. We don't have a lake and dogs aren't allowed. The remainder of your review could be talking about either place.

Took my friend to Pukeiti as she had never been there and she wants to go again. I hadn't been there since 1975 so it had definitely changed in a big way.

Thanks Helen, yes I'm sure it's changed a lot since 1975! The big leaf rhodos are looking stunning now (mid August) and the main season rhododendrons are just starting. If you get a chance to bring your friend again soon I'd highly recommend it.

Since the Taranaki Regional Council took over the upkeep and funding of Pukeiti it has become a major attraction with sealed walkways and viewing platforms. The rhododendrons and azaleas are probably the best collection in the world. The cafe isalso well worth a visit.

Thanks for your great review, Colin. The cafe is taking a break at the moment but will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during September and then every day (except Christmas) from 1 October.

Sorry to hear you weren't impressed with Pukeiti. It takes about 20 minutes to get there from the edge of New Plymouth. You're right that there's a lot of steel near the entrance - this is to provide access for wheelchairs, push chairs etc down...More

it is lovely to see the improvements which have been make to the Pukeiti Park since my last visit. The high-level walkways make viewing less crowded and easier. I recommend a winter visit to get an idea of the size of the gardens. The rhododendrons...More

A lovely drive out into the country from New Plymouth with pleasant views of Mt Egmont, Taranaki along the way . A cup of coffee on arrival sets you up for a really great experience through well cared for Gardens along well maintained tracks.
