Situated about 10 Km from Rotorua and on the same road as the Blue & Green Lakes. This is the 3rd time I have visited this attraction bringing visiting friends from the UK. It has been an enjoyable and interesting trip each time. The story of the volcanic eruption back in 1886 is extremely well told through an interesting museum... More

We went here to see the devastation caused by the eruption of Mt Tarawera in the 19th century. Hundreds of Maori were killed in the eruption along with several Paheka. The Smith family have made a wonderful job of excavating the remains of the village with great sympathy and the descriptive panel are excellent. The walk down the steps to... More

Thanks for the 5 star rating and encouraging comments. The Smith family efforts over three generations have certainly help preserve this slice of New Zealand history for future generations. Glad you opted for the Wairere Falls walk - it truly is worth the effort. More

Great to see what's left of the original village with a very interesting history. We got there a little late in the day. Luckily there are numerous photo opportunities. You could easily spend a couple of hours here to take it all in. The extra walk to the waterfall at the bottom is well worth the journey

There is so much to take in on what used to be an amazing tourist attraction in the 1800's. Your self guided tour can be taken in a leisurely pace to take in all the information on the people and businesses of the era. It is an open space and recommend a jacket for the slow walkers. The more adventurous... More

This is a beautiful setting for an attraction based on a terrifying disaster. You first go through a well-set up museum explaining what happened here in 1886 (I think?) It gives you background about the key people involved, who you find out more about when you go through the village site itself . It is very well set out, with... More

We were rushed on our holiday and didn't get to explore the village or surrounding area as we would of liked. What we saw we loved. Worth the visit to the village but make a day of it. Visit the village and then Enjoy the lakes, the view and walks around. Cost just under $70/couple for the buried village.

This is a great place to learn about what happened all those years ago with the volcanoes and try and understand how terrifying it must have been for all the families when it happened. Loved the walk to the waterfall and around back to entrance. Cafe smelled lovely but we didnt eat there.

Being a Kiwi I really enjoyed my visit here. It was very interesting and informative. Walking around the village was quite emotional. I so wish I would of been able to visit the Pink and White terraces, what an amazing wonder of the world that was destroyed by mother nature herself. I learnt a lot during my visit here and... More

It's great having Kiwis visit and learn the history of early tourism in New Zealand and how the eruption of Mt Tarawera had such a devastating effect on the surrounding area. This can be a very moving experience. Thanks for visiting and hope to see you again on your next trip North. More

We had a few hours to spare one morning, so my husband chose to visit the buried village. This was an interesting way to fill in an hour. The museum and displays were interesting and educational. We enjoyed the peaceful walk through the village and to see the waterfall. The talking tour guide via a handheld device was easy to... More
