Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

I'm not still quite sure what to think about this show. It's an interesting combination of massive business for tourists and some really authentic moments. It's definitely not cheap and I'm not sure it worth the price, however the feeling that the money will (hopefully) help to keep the Maori cultural heritage alive was helpful. For someone like me it... More

Highly recommended! The bus rides there and back were filled with entertaining banter and good information, the actual tour itself was very polished, well-rehearsed and highly informative. The food was so good! I've had hangis before, and will admit, I am not overly fond of, but the hangi in this particular tour was exceptional. All the staff were friendly and... More

We had a really interesting and enjoyable evening!. We learnt many interesting things about Maori history and culture, and the food experience (the hangi!) was amazing. To top it off, our driver Wallace was incredibly informative, he made us more and more curious while we were driving to the village and he made sure we enjoyed every minute even of... More

Very good guide in the bus in to the Tamaki village. Great visit to o learn about Maori traditional living and culture. One big minus was when we was having the hangi food. It was not a pleasant o calm dinner. You had hardly time to eat before the food was taken away. Should like it to be more slow... More

I went here with my mother while she was visiting me in New Zealand. We weren't sure what to expect, especially as there was such a variety of Maori cultural attractions in the area. We were left throughly impressed from the beginning to the end. First of all, they arrange pick up for you from most local accommodations. Very handy... More

My husband and I decided we wanted to learn a little about the Maori culture while we were traveling around NZ. We were not disappointed. My husband was the chief of our bus (each tour bus going to the village has a chief nominated/volunteered and they take part in the welcome ceremony as well as other parts of the night).... More

Our evening visit to the village in the forest outside Rotorua was entertaining from beginning to end. Even the journey on the coach was fun as the Maori driver and one of dancers entertained us en route. We approached the impressive wooden village walls in the dark with low level atmospheric lighting adding to the experience. Maori chants from the... More
