About
The National Aquarium of New Zealand, on Napier’s Marine Parade, is home to over 100 rich and diverse saltwater, freshwater and land animal exhibits from New Zealand and around the world. You can view native saltwater and freshwater species, as well as exotic reef and deep-sea fish from around the world. Meet the famous Naughty and Good Little Penguins! The kiwi, tuatara and penguin enclosures provide an insight into New Zealand's most precious species. Also on exhibition are species from the Americas, Asia and Australia, including piranhas. Allow one to two hours to make the most of your visit or book a close encounter with our Little Penguins, Piranha, Tuatara or Kiwi. Open every day (except Christmas Day) from 9am to 5pm. Last entry is at 4.30pm. Daily feeding times are 10am for the reef fish and 2pm for the sharks. The penguins are fed at 9.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

Good value for money
Jul 2021
Some interesting exhibits with a good NZ focus. The penguins were frolicking within touching distance.
Also it is possible to see the Kiwi which is a bit hit and miss at other places.
However for a National aquarium it is rather small when compared to Kelly Tarltons (or overseas aquariums) but also half the price.
The underwater travellator exhibit was underwhelming.
For us it was a great activity on a rainy day.

Avoid the Cafe
Jun 2021 • Family
The actual Aquarium was great but our morning coffee in the cafe was a disaster. The service outstandingly poor. The coffee took ages to be served and the heated scone even longer. By heated I meant too hot to handle. Very poor understanding in how to serve food. The tables were not cleaned as well despite there being few people in the cafe.

Wonderful experience it was!!!!

Went there with my sister and her kids and I just loved it. It is not only good for kids but for adults too. It brings back the little kid back in you. A big selection of fishes and other species that kids just love to watch.

Dissapointing
May 2021
Its such a shame that this is the National Aquarium of NZ :( they do need to invest in more sealife. The main feature is their shark tank however there is one lonely shark and one baby stingray with a couple of half dead fish floating, it could do with a tad more live fish and at least some sort of coral and seaweed whether its artificial or real. An absolute disappointment :(

One of the better aquariums we’ve visited
Apr 2021 • Family
This aquarium is far more than just an aquarium! Thoughtfully laid out, there is an interactive “lab” where kids can simulate an tsunami, a dinosaur display, turtles, penguins and much more. There is the obligatory aquarium tunnel on a travelator, but this was a minor feature for me - the real attractor lay in the other displays. Did I mention the kiwi house? Yes, even a kiwi house!

Easy way to spend an hour or two
Apr 2021 • Family
It was an easy way to spend an hour but the building and aquarium did feel tired and in need of some updating, love and care. Given it’s the national aquarium we did expect more. But it is always nice to spend time with animals so we enjoyed our visit. Just set your expectations before visiting.

Pleasantly surprised
Apr 2021
Having been a visitor to the old Aquarium and knowing the scenario they have been through, I was not expecting much. But the aquarium is a vibrant and alive place, with great staff, great exhibits and we spent a few happy hours here.

The aquarium has been revamped and contains plenty of exhibits that are not only beautiful but very informative. From Kiwis, to Penguins, the exhibits are close and vey watchable...with the crowning glory being that one can walk through the main aquarium and watch and view fish really close up.

There was a great looking turtle in the tank and he/she was impressive..

A pleasant surprise was that your ticket allows you to visit the aquarium and then come back later, if you want to see the penguins feed time...or just want another look.

I was reluctant to go, but now Im converted..well done Napier.

A must-do when in Napier, my advice is to go when it opens at 9 am and catch the 9.30 feeding of the penguins

Worth visiting

Penguins are great and staff were very friendly and informative. There is a small cafe and gift shop. We went on a Thursday afternoon and it wasn't busy

Nice Aquarium
Feb 2021 • Couples
Nice displays, great work they do with saving injured penguins. Could use a few more signs about the different fish in the tanks.
