So many things you have to pay for in NZ, this tour was free. There were only 4 people on the tour but the guide gave us the full tour and answered all of our questions. I'd lost my sense of smell, but my wife said the tanning process stank. We were offered free samples of wool outcuts at the... More

The interesting thing to know about classic sheepskins is that they are factory retailer. The slippers are made onsite and sold out front in the shop. Anyone who has purchased from a factory before expects not to be slapped with full retail due to their significantly lower overheads, ie zero distribution and transport costs, and zero rental for their floor... In the Classic Sheepskins factory shop we carry a mix of first grade slippers, factory seconds, test products, end of line styles. We also carry first grade sheepskins through to seconds, pieces and loads of other products as the result of being a manufacturer. Also in the shop are knitwear products from other companies at standard retail prices. Being 1... More

Wanted slippers made in NZ, not those sold in tourist stores made who knows where. They have a great variety, and the staff was very helpful. Love buying from a small locally-owned business. Highly recommend.

I am a staunch animal lover so I didnt like the idea of animal skins etc. It was very interesting what they do but I couldnt stomach it! Others in my group loved it so really depends on how you feel about this sort of thing.

We were on tour. The sheepskin tannery was a part of it. It was interesting to see how sheepskins are prepared but walking through the factory may not be for everyone as there are some places with odors that could be objectionable. It wasn't terrible but be ready. You can buy all kinds of sheepskin products but they are not... More

What sets this apart from all the other sheepskin outlets you see everywhere is that they have scheduled tours of the tannery which is very fascinating! They also have a wide range of other animal skins including goat, buffalo, cow, deer, rabbit etc. The staff were very helpful, informative and friendly.

This is both a factory outlet store here and a tannery. There is nothing fancy about this place. It is a group of industrial buildings in an industrial area. There is off street parking right next yard full of cloths lines full of drying sheep skins. We stopped here because we had heard they have tours of the tannery and... More

The tour was a five minute walk through with brief explanation. I would not recommend it as a reason for visiting this location however if you happen to be shopping at the store then know that the tour won't take long but don't expect to walk away an expert in sheep skin tanning.

As others have said, its easy to overlook this place and that would be a shame, as they provide fantastic service and sell really good products. The sheepskin slippers are a particular favourite and sure do keep your tootsies warm! The premises aren't exactly glamorous, but that's really not important.

In addition to the retail store, Classic Sheepskins offers a free tour of their processing plant. It's not fully operational on the weekends, but it was still fascinating to learn about how sheepskins are dried, trimmed and fluffed. This isn't a can't-miss attraction, but if you've got a few extra minutes in Napier it's a fun and educational experience.
