Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

Visited on market day. Brilliant vibe though parking was tough to find a spot. Very busy but that made it vibrant. Great niche shopping experiences for food and crafts. Definitely try and go on a market day - just for the experience!

Lovely place to visit while in Auckland. It is definitely worthwhile and offers as much choices if not more than Waiheke with plenty of local produce, very friendly people, great wineries, river boat tours, surfing lessons, local crafts, breweries and more!!

We have been to Matakana Village a few times now. Its a lovely place to stroll around. Check out the markets (on market days), book shop and curio shops. The strawberry icecreams are brilliant, although available in season.
