We were taken here on our first day in New Zealand and it set the tone for the rest of our trip. Magnificent views and an interesting visitor's centre introduced us to Maori culture and local flora and fauna. The ice cream is good too !

Waitakere Ranges are criss-crossed by tens of walking tracks. They are along the West Coast near Auckland. We can do long or short walks and there are camping sites. The views along the coast are very scenic. The tracks are identified and well maintained. It's a very big park.

The Waiteks as we call them offer wonderful short and long treks through the "bush" (rainforest with some big Kauri trees), fantastic surf beaches (can be a bit dangerous though, so only swim where the life guards are) and just driving along Scenic Drive is lovely with some great views on the way.

The visitor center has a range of walks for every fitness level. For a fun activity book in for the Watercare train ride. This travels over viaducts and through tunnels with glow worms. Need to book a long time in advance. After this head over to Piha Beach. On the way back visit Elevation Cafe... the views of Auckland are... More

nice walks on the south shores getting to the vineyards, you have a clue of how rich and smart people can earn a living off work in Auckland and raise a family off the world

The trails (specifically the plant ID trail) were lovely and offered a welcome break from life in downtown Auckland. There is a nice view of the water and a panoramic viewpoint on one of the trails (can find it on the map). Thoroughly enjoyed hiking here and would do again. The visitor center was neat- lots of information available, cool... More

The Arataki visitors centre is one of my must-dos when I'm hosting overseas visitors. There's great views of the city and the Waitakeres on Scenic Drive and the centre itself also has some great views. It's really educational for adults and kids alike and provides a really good overview of our natural fauna, flora and our birds and animals. There's... More

A really interesting visitor centre. We especially enjoyed the insects/geckos/native fish on display. Lots of nearby walks of varying length nearby. And there was a highly recommended ice cream truck in the car park!!
