Went over to Rangitoto for the day and very happy we did. It's quite a tough walk but plenty of places to stop and rest along the way. NB - there are NO catering or retail facilities on the island so take supplies with you.

Yes, but bring a raincoat and warm clothes. The paths are solid so it is not muddy.

No you can just ferry over and walk around anywhere you like. Free maps are Available and the tracks are all well marked.
