We stayed at the Lake Waikaremoana Holiday Park. Right from the time of booking, the service we received from Petrina and Teresa was outstanding. Our chalets were comfortable and clean, with wonderful views out to the Lake. We used Dave and Tegwen Dodds to water-taxi us over to the other side of the lake for our day's walk. Once again,... We drove over 3 hours from Napier expecting to find a DOC site in order to obtain information about short walks in the area. We found the DOC site which is now closed and has apparently moved however we drove 2 klm each way and couldn't find a new information/DOC site. We were able to find the short walks to... More

We did this walk over Waitangi weekend this year. We took 4 days to do the walk though it could be done in 3. Most chose to do it in 4 because you need the shorter day on the last day in order to get back to civilisation as Waikaremoana is quite a way off the beaten track. We walked... More

I do believe the lake is one of the great New Zealand walks, and if not it should be. there are DoC (Department of conservation) huts that can be hired for lodging and there is also tracks up to the top of the bluff. The hunting and trout fishing are awesome. beautiful place to get away alone amongst nature or with... My wife and I are 50 year old New Zealanders and last visited at least 20 years ago. Interesting being a tourist in your own country and it stood up very well. Great carving school and excellent weaving and I learnt more about types of flax used, probably the best in the country available for tourists to see outside of... More

Did this hike over NYE with Walking Legends and had the time of my life. Great guides - genuine kiwis and perfect hosts, we had a ball. No hope of losing any weight on this trip - the food was just too good. The scenery is unbelievable - weather was perfect to see the cloud forest at its best -... More

I spent essentially just under 24hrs in this location and stayed overnight at the Waikaremoana Holiday Park. Has showers, toilets and a kitchen. On check-in, I even got a complimentary bag of lollies (sweets to you Brits). The hosts were very friendly and knowledgeable. Booking online was very easy and done approx. three days before staying there, the rates were... More

In the past 11 years we have stayed at the Waikaremoana Holiday Park and this time we noticed significant changes in the place we chose. We stayed in a Chalet which has been upgraded nicely it was so cosy, comfortable and very clean. Really happy to see the park maintained by the local tribes of this area. Lake Waikaremoana has... We did this walk with Walking Legends and it was fantastic. They provided all the food, organised all the transport and all we had to do was show up. Seeing in new years in the nature bush was great too with all the other trampers. There was a campfire and lots of good food and drink. Had the best time... More

The lake has plenty of trails and is really a great experience. Bushes, waterfalls, rivers, all worth a full day of trekking. DO NOT MISS Lou's Lookout path, 45 mins return walk which will astonish you both for the walk and the final lookout. A must do for everyone.
