Dr Rod sits at his usual table with friends and a bottle of premium shiraz under the William Dargie portrait of Jimmy Watson (replaced by a copy after some unfortunate business), while suits and jackets stand at the bar after a day's work and others take their seats in the dining room or court yard outside or on the street.... It is always a wise idea to visit places you have reviewed in the past to ensure that your memories equate to your latest experience...and this is so with the (hate this word) ICONIC Jimmy Watson's Wine bar and Restaurant par excellence. Having spent 50 years visiting this establishment (see previous reviews), it was revelatory to notice that the passing... More

We love spending time in the back courtyard where you can feel the serenity after the Lygon St buzz. We enjoyed the good service and professional attitude. The brains special was indeed special and so hard to find nowadays. It was light and very delicious.

We visited from Sydney and wanted a nice place to catch up with local family members and celebrate a birthday. There were 8 of us and it was a great restaurant in a great location, and the food was varied enough to satisfy a wide age range and at reasonable cost. The staff were very friendly and helpful, overall a... More

Old school wine bar on Lygon St still keeps on going. Wine/beer on noisy footpath can be fun. Good meeting place to start the night. Dining in is not great but not worst meal around. The rooftop has been the winner on a sunny day. A birthday with friends was great fun and I recommend that as a venue for... More

I have always wanted to visit this iconic establishment in the heart of Carlton as I am a I think a wine connoisseur - after all this is the place where the Jimmy Watson wine awards were born in the early 1960's. As an aside my Father-In-Law worked for Best's Great Western (Great Western Region) in the 60's and had... More

Sampled a recommended Shiraz and the bar man was on the money as we enjoyed more bottles with our meal. The mains were old fashioned but nice and wholesome and our group of eight were happy with their steaks ,shanks and seafood choices. We had a private room upstairs as the restaurant area was full,a bit pokey and would cancel if forced... Appalling behavior from presumed owner berating staff in Wolf Bar within very clear earshot of myself and friends as we enjoyed a final drink and cheese platter after a beautiful day out elsewhere. Not sure if we can ever return to this favored icon. Very very disappointed at the Behaviour of the presumed owner of a business that has such... More

Having reviewed this hallowed wine venue recently, I decided a return visit, purely for altruistic reasons, was a must on a flying visit to Melbourne. When you give a glowing review, it is important to follow up and ensure the white wine is still perfectly chilled, the reds are at room temperature and that the cognac has not lost its... More

It had been years since visiting Jimmy Watson's, and it was lovely to return this week for dinner. I was on my own and didn't at all stand out, despite it being frantically busy. The people watching within the wine bar was terrific, and the windows are big enough to see the passing diverse crowd go by. The menu is... More

Staying in Lygon Street

Neighbourhood Profile
Lygon Street
If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the place. Until recently, this neighbourhood was home to the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who started their day with a local espresso. They are gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this Little Italy which has something for everyone. Starched white tablecloths, candles, pizza the way they do it "back home" and maybe even a bit of amore. The number of gelato choices will leave you in a state of indecision and wide footpaths, big awnings and a sea of packed tables makes this al fresco dining experience a continental buzz. Even if you’re not eating, it’s worth the stroll just for the people-watching, which, of course, is an Italian tradition.
