The Astor is one of the last single screen movie palaces left in the world, showing movies continuously since being built in 1936, and transporting you to a time when going to the movies was an event.

The Astor is the wrong side of town for us to visit often, but where there is something special on ( and the Astor works to find those special events) then it is well worth the trip. There is a special ambiance in the place, it might be the relaxed food and drink rules, or just the good sight lines... More

We visited the Astor on Christmas Eve to watch "Its a Wonderful Life". It was a brilliant start to Christmas in a beautiful old theatre!

Although we have to travel just under two hours to get there my husband and I often frequent the Astor Theatre to watch movies. They show a great selection of old and new stuff. While this theatre doesn't have all the bells and whistles of new cinemas, and the seats can be a little uncomfortable, the retro charm and commitment... More

Beautiful theatre which is a rare gem to be able to watch movies in. Parking can be a bit tricky but it's worth the inconvenience.

Forget the bogan vibe of regular cinema venues. This place is incredible. Love the resident cat who flanks around the place. Film choices sit between quirky and classic. Seating options both upstairs and on ground level are welcome. Stunning retro decor. Bar service. Best value in the double feature presentations.

What can I say that has not already been covered by other comments? This is an absolute treat to visit if you love cinemas and films of yesteryear. Have always enjoyed going there when I still lived in Melbourne, and even more so on the odd occasions when we get to visit! Now that it has re-opened under the management... More

If only I lived closer to the Astor Theatre, I swear I would be there every night instead of only the occasional visit like last night when I went to see legendary 80's cult movie Class of 84. The Astor is a step back in time when the world moved at a slower, more genteel pace. Not only is it... More

I went to the Astor as a surprise to watch Purple Rain. I haven't been in maybe 15 years to the Astor. Everything is still the same in original condition. Art Deco. It's a really cute experience old leather uncomfortable chairs, but still great. I recommend the banana ice creams soooo good. It nearly closed down a few years ago... More

No better place to watch a movie. Yippee Ki-ay Mother******! (As Bruce Willis AKA John McClane might say in any of his Die Hard films!)

This place is straight out of the archives. Retro is everywhere and I think that is what it survives on. I found the sound quality to be a little average but they are not known for their high tech presentations. There tends to be a fair amount of older movies shown so maybe it was the quality of the movie... More
