We arrived at old Melbourne Gaol just before 12 on Saturday. We chose Saturday for the Ned Kelly theatrical performance and watch house experience, that was included in the general admission price. Both of which were interactive and informative ways to learn about the history...More

Had a great time, lots of reading but it was interesting information. We did the hangmans tour and it was great, little spooky being there in the dark. Watchhouse experience was fun.

If in Melbourne, many are encouraged to visit this historical icon particularly since it was the site of Ned Kelly' demise. However, given the cost .... It is a bit over rated! Yes, there are interesting pieces such as death masks and the gallows where...More

The best part was the watch house experience. They pretend you have been arrested. And show you the cells as they were left. In the gaol you saw death masks and lots of info, but lots of reading. Ned Kelly's death mask is there. It...More

Guide did well to tell the tale of the lost souls who entered and suffered therein. Different levels of punishment (Dante?) and of course the infamous Ned Kelley. One can see the action of the hangman's trap.

We learned so much about the history of Melbourne by visiting the Gaol. It gave quite an insight into the lives of the not-so-well to do in the early days. You can really get a feel for what it was like in the gaol. We...More

The gaol is worth a visit. I'd also recommend the watch house tour which is included in the ticket price. The watch house also has a recently added display about the Russel Street bombing, including items and audio never made available to the public before....More

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways
tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary
feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the
city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques,
throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You
never quite know what you’ll find around the next
corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and
even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air

You have to telephone the Gaol or check out the website for night tours, they have three and they run on different nights. I think they release the nights and times up to 2 weeks before. These are different to the day tours.
