The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

Originally opened in 1837 and renovated significantly every generation, the Theatre Royal is today a beautiful and dated jewel box of a theatre, supporting a full range of staged theatrical productions for audiences of roughly 700 people. The season offerings are varied and of good...More

In fact, more for the history buffs!! An interesting tour that really proved that beautiful old buildings deserve a place in our modern society. To see so many facets of any theatre (back stage and in front of house, inside and out) is a wonderful...More

A beautiful space. The show is secondary to the setting and ambience. Say yes to a visit to this theatre. My favourite seats are the first row of the balcony.

Like many older Theatres, this has history! The story is that it was going to be pulled down but the local people and Lawrence Olivier stepped in to save it. Thank goodness. It has a great atmosphere and there is always something going on. The...More

This is a beautiful building and we (as residents of Hobart) are lucky to have it! It serves as an intimate and user friendly venue for some of the best entertainment in Hobart

If you get a chance to book a show its well worth the visit. The theatre in itself is worth the visit. Magnificently renovated, a Hobart icon.

Had a great night out with my teenage daughters to see the musical "The Diamonds". Beautiful, lovely old theatre with lots of character.

You can feel the history the minute you walk into this theatre, like stepping back in history. There are meant to be ghosts there! Great dress circle and the gods are the nosebleed seats up the top. There is a nice pub next door called...More

This is a gracious old dame of a building with its rococo details and quirky sight lines. Be prepared to crane around a post if you book a seat with a 'compromised view' of the stage. The seats in the dress circle are comfy but...More

We were up in the gods. Wooden bench seats that weren't super comfortable but they were cheaper. It was also a bit too warm and muggy up there. Beautiful stage and theatre.
