We did the self guided tour, and felt that there was only limited information provided. There is very little of the original internal structures remaining. However, the cost of entry was minimal, so we felt that this was good value for money. Probably would have been more interesting if we had taken the guided tour.

We really enjoyed exploring the site and looking at what is left of the place. The printed guide is really helpful but we would recommend joining a tour and/or the 'Her Story' tour, a well-written 'drama' that manages to convey much in a short amount of time. The actors were terrific, very good at improvising and spent some time at... More

164,000 convicts (ranging from starving people who took bread, clothing for their freezing children to professional theives) were sent to Australia. Catherine took us through this complex and explained the dynamics of a woman prison holding ages from 11 to 74. When you see the cascades female factory signs, unless you delve further you don't realise that this was the given name at the time for female prisons....not well-signposted and the overseeing tourist/council body needs to mention the prison status on billboard advertising, this will ensure many more visitors and hence revenue.Very informative place. Superb re-enactment undertaken by 2 local actors-well... More

I've been wanting to get to the Female Factory for some time so today was a perfect Autumn day to do just that. A friendly attendant explained the number of options for experiencing this historic site and we settled on the full 'Her story' and guided tour package. I was surprised with how moving and evocative the dramatic 'Her Story'... More

There are not many remainings of the ancient buildings, only some marks on the floor to tell you where the different facilities used to be. It was a little bit dissapointing. We were expecting something different. Nevertheless you can learn about the living conditions of those women. The staff is very friendly.

Dear areqdom, Thank you for visiting us during your time in Hobart. The remains of the female factory share a very special history for Hobart and the female convict life in Tasmania in the 1800s. Due to the age of the site not a large amount remains however four years ago a large amount of work was undertaken to provide... More
