Nice wide beach with clean fine sand. Very nice to walk on. Lots of coconut trees on the edge so please be mindful of falling coconuts (never seen any fall in my many visits). Very well patrolled in central Port Douglas just up from Macrossan st. Can hire beach umbrellas/lounges/ tubes/ towels for the day at a reasonable cost. Be mindful of seasonal jellyfish, travelling crocodiles and the occasional sea snake but that goes with the location and is nothing to worry about and you will be informed if any of those things appear. One of the best mainland beaches in Australia.

We visited Four Mile beach at the Bruno Riedweg park end. Lovely stretch of beach, sand soft, had a lovely walk near palm trees and water was so warm in July! Great place for a view of sunrise.

What a fabulous beach! We walked from our rental apartment. The tide goes out a long way leaving a very wide sandy beach. There were so few people! We were amazed at the lack of congestion on such a glorious sunny afternoon. It’s jellyfish season so we swam in the netted area without stinger suits. The water was soo warm! Incredible. We didn’t spend too long as we were going on a sunset cruise. Beach beds and umbrellas are available for rent near the lifeguard station.
Four mile beach is wonderful! Should not be missed.

We’ve visited and swum at Four Mile Beach many times over the years, but I couldn’t believe the umbrellas and deck hairs that have been jammed onto the beach of the netted swimming area! It effectively limited you to squeezing in between two adjacent ‘units’ (with another immediately behind you). And to add insult to injury, the private operator was charging $40! It was like the worst of Europe, where they jam in squadrons of chairs. The great tradition in Australia is to lay your towels down on the sand (it is comfortable for most Aussies), maybe with an umbrella or cabana these days. I felt sorry for the overseas tourists who sat down and got ambushed by the private operator. The water was absolutely beautiful the day we were there (mid-November). The weather was great, but please, please take away those awful plastic chairs so we can have our beach back.

Superb beach bordered by palm trees. It is possible to rent parasols and deckchairs. The beach is supervised on the Douglas "village" port side, an anti-jellyfish protection net is installed and the toilets are nearby as well as a good restaurant bar.

We went for a walk one evening before dinner with my husband and toddler ho loved walking along the beach. It wasn’t very crowded at all and lots of people relaxing and walking dogs or doing yoga. Shame we didn’t make it to the beach again in the day but would definitely recommend.

We came to 4 Mile Beach as part of the Port Douglas Carnivale program and enjoyed a swim. The beach was a flurry of activity with music, bachata dancers, a fantastic skydiving display with the divers landing on the beach and a kite display with kites of all colours of the rainbow in the shape of fish, octopus etc. The beach is my favourite in FNQ (tied with Ellis & Etty Bay), you can swim there (stay between the flags) and it probably the safest & most beautiful up this way, though the odd Croc is spotted from time to time. Nearby are cafes (we had brunch at Lighthouse cafe) & amenities, and Macrossan St shopping & dining precinct is a short walk away. Also, do the Flagstaff Hill headland walk if you can, for some fantastic views over Four Mile Beach.

Totally unspoilt beautiful beach. We couldn’t swim because it was red flagged but enjoyed walking along the pristine waters edge. Slightly freaked by crocodile warnings along path to beach but glad they were there. We would’ve waded through high tide river flow otherwise. Note to self - check high/low tide before planning to walk to Port Douglas along the beach. Absolutely glorious view along the bay. Worth the effort definitely.

Four mile beach is beautiful to take photos of and stroll along but to swim in, mmm no thanks.
The only safe place to swim, thanks stingers, is a small netted area you try to share with numerous people with the same idea. Having been there at this time of the year there’s not too many people, but come June/July it feels as though half the town is there giving you two inches of space too enjoy, no fun.
Whilst we were there in March it was like a washing machine and dirty as hell.
Oh did I mention that there has been crocodile sightings on the beach which means the beach is closed.

This is one of the many things to do in Port Douglas.....a simple walk on the beach. I have done it before and always enjoyed it. Big difference this time was low tide. I walked in one day, and rode a hire bike the next....simply stunning. Early start saw dolphins and other fish feeding....as well as plenty of others walking.
Well worth finding out the tide (google) and going when it is at low tide.

Is four mile beach safe at sunrise/sunset for photography?
Written 7 January 2022
We didn't have any problems either at sunrise or sunset. We walked up the beach at both times of day to go swimming in the swimming enclosure.

Hi going this way and concerned i never see anyone in photos swimming in water here at 4mnile or up by Thala-Besides the Stinger season in Summer, are these beaches swimmable in the "winter months" July , August? We love a beautiful beach but also love our water time... and hope to find a beach in this area North of PDouglas that is swimmable. Thank you!

Yes Four Mile is swimmable in July Aug. Beautiful - swim near surf life saving area.
You will need to contact Thala re swimming there.

Is that beach near Cape Tribulation?
Can you pay $110 Australian Dollars to Cape Tribulation horse rides and go horse riding on Four Mile Beach?
Written 25 February 2018
The Daintree is a reasonable distance from 4 Mile Beach - about an hours drive further north. I've never seen horses on the beach and doubt they are allowed, but don't know for sure.

Is there crocodiles and stingers in the sea near Four Mile Beach?
Written 18 February 2018
At certain times of year, stingers yes and crocodiles are possible. Sadly a woman was taken from an inlet at the end of Four Mile Beach (the end furthest away from Port Douglas) last year.
It’s a beautiful beach but you just can’t swim or play in it apart from an area at the end of Macrossan Street that has safety nets and is patrolled.

When is a good time to go to four mile beach in the netted area for a swim and a walk ? Morning or afternoon ?
Written 1 May 2017
Morning before the prevailing SE wind picks up usually the best.

We are traveling in December. Is there a time of year w/o stingers and crocs? What about bugs, no seeums, biting flies anything like these nuisances? What is the cost for renting sand chairs?
Written 22 April 2017
December is the middle of stinger season. Not sure about chair rental but if you are staying at a resort they should be free. Port Douglas is in the tropics and there are always insects about, plenty of places sell tropical strength insect repellant.

We are traveling to Port Douglas the middle of April. Is it safe to swim at 4 Mile Beach? Is the weather typically warm enough at this time of the year to enjoy swimming at the beach and Is the water comfortable at that time or is it a little cold? We're trying to decide lon the best place to stay. Cairns or Port Douglas? Thanks for your help.

If u dare..... just because it's the off season doesn't mean they aren't there

Hi
is it safe to swim in the sea in March? are there many crocs?
Thanks
Les
Written 9 January 2017
We only swam in the netted area which is patrolled and regularly checked for any small stingers that may slip through the net. We were there in January which we would NOT recommend as the water was 29 degrees, like getting into a warm bath tub and not a refreshing dip. Better off swimming in the rock pools at Mossman Gorge but it is out of town.
Written 19 January 2017
Hi there,
Yes obviously it should be good, cause not warm enough yet for stingers, however, always ask local council, lifeguards, or locals if you are not quiet sure.

Amazing, Thanks for the photos, will be there in two weeks for a month, hope the weather holds and its nice and warm. PD here we come...
