We were advised by Kings Canyon that a 4x4 was required and we were given the impression that they would not issue the pass unless they could actually see the 4x4 we had. The tourist information at Alice Springs advise only a car such as a Rav 4 would be ok. The road was fine when we travelled on it.... More

We took the road from Kings Canyon to Glen Helen in September. It's pretty corrugated and some of the floodways were steep, but you can easily do 70-80km/h in a 4wd most of the way. We drove a Ford Ranger towing an off-road camper trailer and had no trouble. We did let our pressures down slightly for comfort, but didn't... More

As we were not experienced off road drivers we were a little apprehensive about the drive. We were in a all wheel drive car and the drive was easy. The road is very wide and although there are some bumpy sections there were no areas that gave us any concern. No wildlife to be seen apart from some beautiful brumbies... More

Before we set off on the Mereenie Loop Road, now re branded the Red Centre Way I was a little apprehensive, as I had read a lot of mixed reviews about its condition, and understood that after a period of rain it can be challenging. It had rained the night before we left from Alice, but not significantly. Google also... More

We found the trip rough as guts with accompanying spectacular scenery. I think this is the best way to experience the west MacDonnell ranges. The landscape icons tangly changes throughout the trip. We tackled the road with a 200 Series Land Cruiser and 21' off road van and had no real difficulties. Critical to check road and weather conditions before... More

DO NOT listen to the staff at The Kings Canyon Hotel as they will tell you NOT to travel this badly corrugated rocky dangerous road. Luckily I ignored their advice and went as this was a major part of our trip and we were not disappointed. It was like a typical Kiwi gravel road - as wide as a 4... More

If you're travelling from Alice Springs to King's Canyon, you can use the highway or take the short cut using this dirt track. I wouldn't advise using it to go from Alice Sprins to Uluru since the point of taking this track is to be able to stop on the way and see the wonders of the Australian Outback. We... More

During our road trip from Adelaide to Darwin, my hubby was keen to show the kids where he used to live at glen Helen. As we were at kings canyon, we thought we would take the 'short' route along the mereenie loop. Horribly rough, we got a puncture, so there we are changing a tyre on this hot, red dirt... More

People will tell you this is the "quick" way to reach Alice Springs from Kings Canyon (approx 3 1/2 hrs) but you will start to wonder about this fact, while you are negotiating the dangerous gravelly surface of this never ending, unsealed road. You pass long stretches of scrubby bush and dry tracts of red rock and soil. But you... More
