The area
Neighbourhood: Kings Cross
Changing liquor laws are remodeling "The Cross," Sydney's red light district. These new rules have encouraged trendy cafes and boutiques to pop-up in the area, as well as organic markets on Saturdays. The area's nightclubs are still popular with youngsters, however, who will dance to the early morning hours on weekend nights. There are plenty of artifacts from Kings Cross' shady past when gangsters and liquor houses owned the place. Today, one can still find a variety of adult entertainment venues in this evolving area.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I went to the Kandinsky exhibition at NSW Art Gallery. Excellent, as was the Banksy exhibition the Town Hall. I used an opal card ordered online and posted to me, for trains and ferry. People friendly and polite, didn't hog the disabled/elderly seats and walked on left side when crossing the street, unlike Melbourne!. Only downside was terrible taxi drivers, rude, offhand and unhelpful and pretty much unhelpful re my interstate cab charge voucher.

Advertisements so bright and large you're taken to a sordid, dystopian nightmare. Landmark coca cola advertisement which is the only thing of character separating the concrete sky towers from depressive monotony

I first visited Kings Cross 50 years ago when I was in high school. Kings Cross was the most notorious red-light district in Australia. Ladies of the night lined Darlinghurst Road. The most popular show was Les Girls; whether they were actually girls is somewhat dubious, but they were glamorous. Sydney authorities have cleaned up Kings Cross, you could take your family most places. Kings Cross still attracts low-lifes when the sun goes down.

There are many parts to this suburb. There are those bits along the Main Street that would be pretty good for a night out and those other parts that are more family oriented or a visit for a decent bite to eat. It all depends on what the visitor wants to do and experience.

Post covid not much happening here. Down the road in Darlinghurst or Macleay Streets there are better restaurants and shops. Some seedy people still hang out on the streets during the late afternoon in the cross. It's lost some of its shine!

It's the heart of Sydney with nightlife , bats , restaurants and entertainment. Plenty to see and do. It was Mardi gras which is a great celebration.

The cross and the suburbs it is bounded by, Potts Point and Darlinghurst, is our most favourite area, of greater Sydney. The strip (Darlinghurst rd) is where it all happens, which extends from the iconic Coca Cola sign the Alamein fountain. There was a time when the strips was full of strip clubs and brothels, not so much now, just a few exist, and even less are open during these interesting time, however, the strip has evolved, and so has the people with it.

During the day there is shopping, and eating to me had, at its many eateries, Bella Vita awesome and cheap, (see review), and Nung Len, a Thai flavour explosion, (see review). At night is when it comes alive, the bars fill up, the lights of the strip clubs give the place a buzz, our favourite place to visit in the evening is, LIankelly Place, (just off the strip), which has an array of eateries, that will satisfy the most discerning of palettes. The cross is definitely worth a visit.

This used be such a great shethole.... Sydney has lost its night life charm
If no fun at night to be had most as well travel to New Zealand and get to see so much more for a lot less.
Sydney seems to be one big semi modern ugly apartment and bunch of offices with metro supermarkets everywhere...

It used to be colourful and dynamic, but now it is just dead dead dead. The LNP NSW government lock out laws just killed it. No more lively pubs with live bands and uniquely Australian cuisine, all gone now, all being slated for "redevelopment".
