The interior of the monastery is absolutely worth a visit to see the interior and icons which are magnificent. The wine from the gift shop is pretty good!

Although Toplou is about half an hour's slow drive from Sitia (12 to 15 miles) it is well worth the effort to go. The monastery itself is interesting architecturally, the historical exhibits are well displayed and varied and, at the end of your visit, the kafeneio can provide an excellent snack or meal. As well as the Monastery itself there... More

A nice place to visit with historical picture. Very nice monastery with a small but beautiful museum, winery, distillery for raki and olive oil production.Very impressive with the courtyards and the museum of sacred art.

A person or family, could easily spend an entire day at the monastery with an overall cheap and enjoyable experience. For example, one could start of by attending a service at the monastery in the morning. Then, have an fantastic meal at the cafe or just a coffee. Next, you could visit the museum and spend up to two hours... More

This place looks more like a fortification than a monastery from the outside.Inside one can visit the church and a small museum. Wouldn't drive out here just for the monastery, but it is more or less on the way to the eastern shore of Crete. It can be visited while going to Vai or the Gorge of the Dead, for... More

Out of two weeks lazing around from one beach a short drive away or another we decided on a marathon (or two world record marathon) trip around eastern Crete. After enduring and admiring the windy mountain roads from Makry Gialos to Zakros then down again to Paleokastro we took to the Sitea Road and stopped at Toplou. I was more... More

This monastery has one monk -- the abbot -- who has turned this lovely Venetian-era monastery into a money-making machine. There's a cafe, a winery (organic, of course), a vast gift shop, and the entrance fee. There are some nice bits to it, including the treasury, but really there's not much else to see beside. The amazing icon of the... More

Great location for a Byzantine Monastery. Visit and you might feel like praying, faithful or not! Some property problems with the locals, as usual, but it is not what you should be looking for. Check the architecture, get in the Temple and enjoy.
