About
The Museum of Prehistory (Oertijdmuseum) in Boxtel is the Netherlands’ largest geology museum. Here, you will learn all about prehistoric times and can walk among life-size dinosaurs and other extinct species! The remarkable fossils on display take you back ages, while the lovely Prehistory Garden (Oertijdtuin) offers ‘living fossils’ and also plenty of amazing trees and bushes. Add to this the playground and exciting Prehistoric Forest (Oertijdwoud), and this educational museum is a fantastic day out for families with children aged between 4 and 12. As one of our young explorers put it: “We’ve had another great day here, plenty to see and do!” A modern way of experiencing the past Open from 10:00 to 17:00 Tuesdays to Sundays, this museum offers several special packages for children’s parties and also lays on up-to-the-moment themed evenings. Although this is a museum all about things from a very long time ago, visitors can have a surprisingly modern experience here by turning up for a Pokémon Go evening, when they can use the DinohunterBoxtel app to hunt dinosaurs through the village of Boxtel! The museum is the pride and joy of the village and this augmented reality dinosaur hunt is the perfect way to appeal to 21st-century explorers. Something else this museum has to offer is fun scavenger hunts. Country park The museum also houses the visitor centre for Het Groene Woud (The Green Forest), which is a country park in the triangle between ’s-Hertogenbosch, Tilburg and Eindhoven. Here, you can dive into history, hop on a bike for a gorgeous ride through the landscape, enjoy the authentic local produce, strike out on a hot-air balloon adventure or stay for one or more nights locally: there is so much to see and do between these cities. Museum shop and museum café The museum shop offers all kinds of fossils, gemstones, jewellery, books and cuddly toys, but also maps of walking routes and cycle paths through Het Groene Woud country park. Treat yourself to a snack or a drink in the museum café, and if you’ve worked up a real appetite after a day on the trail of the dinosaurs or building your own wooden dinosaur, the multilingual museum staff will be glad to direct you to any of the several atmospheric cafés or pancake restaurants in the locality.

Interesting museum for all dino fans
Sep 2020
We visited the Oertijdmuseum when we were staying in the south of the Netherlands for a few days. Our 7 -year old son had a really good time! He kept yelling 'wow, look at this!'. This is always a good sign ;-) His favorite parts were the hall with the huge dinosaur skeletons and the dino mockups in the park outside. We adults also enjoyed all the fossils in the inside part of the museum. It was very cool to see the scientists, who do their research at the museum, while they were working. Older kids will enjoy reading the descriptions and really learning about prehistoric animals, while younger kids will love seeing all the dino statues in the park. To really enjoy this museum to the fullest, make sure to visit on a day when it's not raining so you can see the outside area as well.

Large fossil collection
Jan 2020
After reading all the other reviews, I was afraid that this might be just for children, but one comment mentioning "dusty showcases" gave me hope. The museum website also says that it is for young and old, and it mentioned a large collection. I found out that a large part of this collection is on display. The fossils, minerals, and some contemporary skeletons come from all over the world. There's trilobites, fish fossils, dinosaur bones, cave bears, mammoths, sawfish, eggs, coprolites, and much more. Some acquisitions come from China, others from Argentine or Morocco. Outside is a park with life-size models of dinosaurs, a pterodactylus, cave bears, a large amphibian, etc.. In total there are more than 100 such models. In the restaurant you can get a tosti, a worstebroodje, some soda or coffee/tea from a machine. You can easily spend an afternoon in this place.

Very interesting for children

The Oertijdmuseum consists in a little museum about fossils and the wildlife of the Netherlands like birds, mammals and shellfishes, there is even the skeleton of a sperm whale. The main hall hosts the calks of important dinosaurs discovered all around the world. The exposition is a little bit chaotic, but there are some interesting specimens. All around there is a park with full size dinosaur dioramas (not always scientifically accurate). The model of the tyrannosaur “Sue” welcomes you at the entrance. There are two playgrounds for children, a little cafeteria and a gift shop with a big choice of souvenirs (some small fossils as well). Very interesting for children.

Worth a couple of hours of anybody's time

Stroll around the grounds with life size (I guess) dinos. Nice place to wonder around, but the weather would need to be ok. No good if it's pouring down. Inside they have a museum with fossils and dino skeletons which is interesting.

It's great for kids, but I went there with my now grown up family and still enjoyed it. For a tenner, you can't complain.

The staff were friendly. And a shop with the stuff you'd expect plus a bit more.

My only gripe is that the cafe there could be better. There is a coffee/tea machine and they sell toasties but not a whole lot more.

But apart from that it'sa pretty decent couple of hours.

It was a nice place to visit with lots of dinosaurs and fossils. Everything seems to be well explained in Dutch but nothing in English (a lot of museum offer descriptions in the local language plus in English, but not in this one and we missed this a lot).
The children loved it, especially in the playground! 😉
Dinosaurs is always a good topic to speak about with children, they always seem fascinated.
Big range of souvenirs to buy; stones, dino in many ways; stuffed animals, plastic toys...

Good experience

Great place to introduce small children to paleontology although there are many mistakes here. The outdoor park with life sized dinosaurs in the woods seems unique and thrilling to 5-8 year old grandchildren.

Very limited parking.

They do not accept credit cards.

Very glad we brought the kids here

A beautiful parc with dinos. Lots and lots of them. Real finds as well as mock ups. Most interesting. For kids lots to do. For parents: visit the museum once without the kids. You won't be disappointed. Even you and the kids can learn about pre historic times. On the woods u can find dinos. You can learn about the plants, trees, scrubs etc. Good vidit for a whole day.

Supersaurus!

Only found this place a month ago & what a find it was. Our young son is into dinosaurs & this place has it all, he literally went ballistic. Entrance price is reasonable. On our 2nd visit we bought a yearly subscription, real bargain, think it was 42 euro for 2 adults (child under 3 free). We'll certainly be there a lot this year, plenty to see & do, also educational for the adults & all the staff are very friendly. Majority of the information is in Dutch, so if your kid is an info sponge like ours be good to brush up the dino translation skills.

All information in Dutch only
Oct 2015 • Family
There is lots to see inside and also the outdoors area is nice to spend some time. I was there with my son of 8 years old who is really interested in Dinosaurs. But unfortunately all information is in Dutch only.
So while it was nice for a visit the lack of English language information combined with the relatively high entrance price gave me all in all mixed feelings.
