We visited Sledmere whilst stopping in our caravan closeby. The Waggoners museum is small but perfectly formed. What a lovely story and we loved the film that shows the story of the Waggoners.

This unique Memorial is not to be missed! It not only commemorates a one-off Unit of the British Army in the First World War, but illustrates in very graphic terms the attitudes prevailing in the 1920s, in terms of how the Germans were viewed in...More

Really unusual war memorial, cartoon like carving, German army portrayed as the "deadly hun" which is probably how these young men were recruited. It tells so many stories about war and propaganda. Fascinating. Next to another WW1 memorial based on an Eleanor Cross.

We were travelling between Hull and Bridlington. Going via Sledmere allowed us to take in a couple of interesting memorials (two planned and the other, the Eleanor Cross close to this unexpected) It's easy to park nearby and walk back. The memorial is so distinctive...More

A very idiosyncratic and distinctive memorial to the men of a very distinctive military formation - the Wolds Wagoners. Loosely modelled on a Roman triumphal column, it narrates the story of the local men who went to war in 1914 - and was regarded as...More

A beautiful memorial with a fascinating history - well worth a visit & researching the story behind it combined with a visit to the wonderful Sledmere Hall.

Sledmere House was closed for a wedding (an increasingly common phenomenon for country houses in the summer I find). But the Memorials make a visit worthwhile when combined with the church.

An unique monument to the First World War men making up the equally unique Wolds Waggoners. The variety of reliefs to the pillars apparently are copied from designs found in Sledmere House.

A previous reviewer (drifter 2016) outlines the background and content of this memorial perfectly, so there is no need for me to add to that. What I would like to say that the village of Sledmere is lovely and it is well worth taking the...More
