Most of the Danube is scenic for the cities, quaint towns or vineyards, but this is the most dramatic for natural beauty. The 3 parts of the Iron Gate are all beautiful, punctuated by the carved head. We did this on a river cruise but...More

Impressive feat of engineering - it is always interesting to see how the phenomenal resources of nature can be managed to our advantage. The locks are just locks if not quite big locks, the scenery is splendid on the way up and through the gorge.

A cruise from Orsova to Iron Gates can be an unforgettable trip because alternating images of mountains, forests, water, plains, history, remain in your brain. The huge Decebal statue stands over the Danube Defile. The journey can be accomplished both on road and water, but...More

Hi We are taking a river cruise with Select Explorer from Passau, Germany to Giurgiu, Romania. Am I correct to assume we will pass through the Iron Gates on the Danube. I am a bit confused as our cruise is offering a tour by bus of the Iron Gates? Not sure if it is just a money grab or if some River Cruises do not pass through this area. Looking at the map it looks like the only way to go! Any information you have would be much appreciated. Regards
