Nice ancient citadel

It is very good place to walk and to touch the piece of ancient history. There is a good view on the Derbent city and Caspian sea in good weather.

We were lucky enough to have a Russian translator to translate the words of our guide. Make suere you have a translator and make sure to hire a guide. Even if you have no guide this place is very beautiful. The inside is beautifully landscaped and relaxing, take a picnic. The fortress contains a sunken church which is pre Islamic,... More

Beautiful fortress that stood on this place for thousands of years is impressive even today. Even though in some repairs and mild chaos, the exhibits are interesting and you can walk around freely. Great experience with amazing views.

Visiting Derbent, where there has been a settlement for (according to the guide my group had) for over 5,000 years, gave me a new sense of perspective about history. Modern vehicles travel on roads that were once trade routes trod by camels and burros, and women and girls weave on looms not much changed since antiquity.
