I would recommend the audio tour to accompany a visit to this place - it really helps to bring to life the tragedy of Flodden Field and the place of Etal Castle within that story.

This is quite a small castle - more of a fortified manor house. The info boards give a great insight into its fascinating history and there is a nice exhibition too about the nearby battle at Flodden. Friendly staff and also very welcoming of our...More

A wonderful find at the end of the local narrow gauge railway from nearby Heathershaw (open carriages plus dog friendly). Yes it's not massive (as some reviewers point out but alas all castles weren't built on a grand scale) but with lots of information, amazing...More

We ended up here at the end of Heatherslaw Light Railway. To be honest we peered over the break in the castle wall rather than pay the charge to get in. Quite small and desolate, so entering into an open space would have given the...More

We came across Etal Castle by accident but were pleased to have done so. It has links to the Battle of Flodden which took place close by. The exhibition tells the story of the battle and the history of the castle. All very interesting and...More
