Fromelles marks the entrance of Australians into the action on the western front. It was a baptism of fire, with horrendous casualties. Many bodies were interred in mass graves. This new cemetery was built in the last decade and reinterred bodies of soldiers from a...More

Next to the Battle Museum and well worth visiting along with a walk out to the German bunker and Australian Memorial. Make sure you have the booklet that explains it all.

A small museum, well set out with lots of information about the two day battle during the first world war. Very evocative.

This is a great story, with Lambis Englezos' detective work to thank for finding the lost burial pits, governmental effort to exhume, identify and re-inter soldiers' remains, and local goodwill from the Village. Sad, as all these places are, but somehow peaceful. Also elating, in...More

The pheasant wood cemetery is a credit to the War Graves Commission for its building and continuing to bury those found who died so very long ago. It is another touching tribute to the men of Fromelles.

The story of Pheasant Wood is one of a man's doggedness to finish a story of brave warriors and another groups desire to give remains a name. Visit and read need time to reflect in the museum afterwards.

Our guide Greg Celerse provided us with an excellent understanding of the development of the cemetery, its background and its positioning with respect to the battlefields of Fromelles. The cemetery is well presented, well maintained and strategically placed within the town, near the Pheasant Wood...More
