Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I'm a pensioner from Moscow in a museum I haven't been there yet, but honestly I don't want to go there anymore. Going on vacation to Sestroretsk a week later, I decided to buy a ticket to Penate on the site of the estate museum, but accidentally clicked the wrong way and mistakenly purchased a ticket to a children's quest for 1,000 rubles. Of course, I am to blame, mistaken, rushed. Wrote a refund application halfway through the ticket purchase. At first, the staff didn't respond to my return letter at all, but I did manage to call this office and they promised to return the money. Today I got 500 rubles instead of a thousand!!!! Explanation- 100% refund is only possible if the ticket is returned at least 10 days in advance!!! Well, I originally bought it in a week - crazy nonsense. Maybe there's someone who buys tickets to this barn a month or a year in advance.

It's an old strange house fully rebuilt after the WW2nd. There is nothing interesting there even if you are a fan of Iliya Repin. I recommend to visit this place only if you are somewhere around and you'd like to spend/kill half an hour on something you don't really care what.

Penates is a great place. We got into Repin after visiting Art museum in Moscow and wanted to see his private mansion in St Petersburg. Our guide suggested we go there. We have never regretted it, it is a short drive (approx 45 minutes from our hotel) away and the place is absolutely empty - no crowds, nothing. Pine trees everywhere, almost by the ocean. Come see this place if you come to St Petersburg

I strongly recommend to visit this museum to everyone. Ilya Repin was a gifted artist. There were outstanding people among the guests at his house. The family had unusual traditions and you will know about them when you listen to your guide and enjoy the immaculate story of the artist's biography. Old video will be demonstrated after the excursion. Look at the special round table in the dining-room. The museum appealed to our children as well. We would gladly see how it looks in summer and have a nice warm promenade in its beautiful garden!

Went here today. Needed to take guided your to see inside the house. Absolutely worth it. Interesting to learn about an artist who was lucky to experience becoming famous and recognized internationally while he was still alive. The park can be visited without a fee.

Really interesting and special museum, especially for those who are familiar with the works of Ilya Repin and those who are interested in the era. They have audio tours in a lot of languages, which is lovely. The ladies at the museum are friendly and willing to help even though most of them only speak Russian. Would definitely recommend!

The Penates estate bought by Ilya Repin, one of Russia's greatest realist painters of the 19th century, was, when he bought it, in Finland in Kuokkala. In 1948 the area became Russian and the town renamed Repino in his memory. While only able to view his home externally the mainly glass studio, still with much evidence of his tools and equipment, was easily visible. The gardens with their "follies" - wooden structures representing the " temple of Isis and Osirus" and the Sheharezade Tower to name but two. Set in woodland with towering conifers and deciduous trees , herbaceous borders flowering in profusion , and meandering streams it is easy to see why Repin chose to be buried here when he died in 1930. After the hustle of St Petersburg, and on the warm sunny day we visited it was idyllic. A glimpse of rural Russia with the Gulf of Finland just across the road. Aparently Repin was to art what Tolstoy was to literature at that time and the visit has stimulated us to get better acquainted with this artist.

Penates is a museum located in Repino, a city located farther North than St. Petersburg, in the Russian Federation. The city was called Kuokkala (a Finish name), but in the middle of 20th Century, it was renowned as Repino, because the painter Ilya Repin lived here. The museum is surrounded by a garden/forest, where you can walk and relax. Pitifully, we arrived there at evening, when the museum was closed, so we only walk around the gardens. Nice.

Make sure they know what language you speak best. Each stop on the tour inside the home has a short interesting pre-recorded talk. If you don’t ask, all will, of course, be in Russian. We asked for English which thoroughly enlivened the visit. A great artist made more personal and human.
