This wetland nature reserve has something to offer everyone and will appeal to families, walkers, birdwatchers and photographers alike. With 8 hides and 3 large lagoons the reserve plays host to a variety of species such as Tufted duck, Common tern, Green sandpiper, Cetti's warbler, Kingfisher, Water vole, Fox, and most recently Black-necked grebe. A great place for children and families with spotter trails, regular events and a monthly wildlife explorer club, but also very popular with birders and people after a relaxing walk or some peace and quiet. The friendly visitor centre offers two classrooms, a bird feeding station, hot and cold drinks and refreshments, and toilet facilities, plus free parking for RSPB members. Opening times are every day from 9 am to 5 pm (or dusk if earlier). Please note that the reserve is closed on Christmas and Boxing Day.

We walked the entire circuit which encompasses the RSPB site and the wildlife trust site with a one-way gate half way around. There are 9 hides on the circuit covering a variety of environments. Unfortunately the kingfishers weren't co-operating today but plenty of other birds to see and a nice walk. The visitor centre has good parking, loos and a... More

Super place to visit with children & there is ample parking. Plenty of hides to watch the Birds from and full of information. The Kingfishers are the highlight & of you walk all the way round it's a good healthy walk too. Volunteers in the office were really friendly & helpful. I re- joined the RSPB on my visit &... More

Glorious - my review has never changed It is a great day out in semi-rural surroundings whether you have any interest in birdwatching or not. We visited several times last year and fully intend to return this year. The only criticism I have is that it closes at 5pm (it is staffed by volunteers so that is fair, but in... More

Hi Inez, thanks for your lovely review. Unfortunately, our 5pm closing is due to the fact that the land we are on actually belongs to Thames Water and as part of our agreement with them, we have to leave it secure when staff leave. We will hopefully be having a late closing and early opening morning sometime later in the... More

Hi, thanks for your review. Just want to let other people know that we have 'Cafe lite' here that sells hot and cold drinks and snacks but no 'meals as such' but feel free to bring along a picnic! More

We visited Rye Meads Nature Reserve on a very hot day for a nice walk through nature more than anything. We were greeted by a staff member, Possibly called Robin? Who gave us a map and explanation which was helpful. £3 for the car park and free entry is great price, bring cash as there is no card machine. Other... More

I have been visiting Rye Meads for about 8 years. My main interest is Kingfishers and Rye Meads has its own Kingfisher bank with nest holes. Most years there are a breeding pair that can be viewed from the hide. You can sit there for hours and see nothing, and other times see lots of activity. Its only after many... More

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Is quite a small reserve but paths were very good and the highlight was definitely the Kingfishers. Got some fantastic views of them fishing. Was worth a visit.

This is just off the canal towpath so its easy to find and is bit of a hidden gem. There is so much to see with the Spotted Today board at the entrance you just have to keep your eyes peeled. Great Hides to watch them with knowledgable staff and volunteers on hand to advise you of where to look... More

Lovely walks by the water and nice place to have lunch. Tow path easily accessible but footpaths to Glen Faba Lake better to have walking guide or map. Fish and Eels pub at the weir a lovely spot to stop for something to eat.
