perhaps it was the wine but finding the entrance to this castle wasn't the easiest but once found it was very rewarding and as well as some museums around the castle you'll get some very pleasant views of leiria from above.

A lot of the castle was in renovations. Not a lot to see, wished there was someone giving a tour or explaining the historical background. The price was low, but it's not worth it.

As a kid, my school would visit the Castle every year. It's a great place to get to know more about Leiria's history, and you'll find some interesting exhibitions too. The balcony with the arches has a great view of the city and is a good photo-op. But what I enjoy most about the castle is the way it looks... More

I am a Leiria Citizen but still love and highly reccomend the castelo for visiting and relaxing. Amazing views from the city, cheap and nice to visit.

The climb up to the castle is well worth it to get a feeling of how important it was to the 14thC Knights Templar defence network for Portugal. The partial restoration allows us to imagine what it was like to live in such a castle, with its walls and turrets, residential quarters, church, garden areas and central defensive keep. There... The castle is situated on a hill where you can see whole city ! It was built by Moors and now one of the most beautiful attractions of the city ! Stylish architecture ! Must see !

We went there after lunch, with a baby. He was sleeping, so it was not so easy on the beggining, of course it's not the floor it's not leveled. After he waked up even he was having fun. It's well preserved and has a very good view and perspective of all the city, and the history is present on photos,... More

A bit hard to get to, we went and the castelo's gates were closed. We checked the open hours on the schedule and it should have been open. Also, we weren't early or late. There was no excuse for it being closed; and, when asking about it in town, we were told this wasn't unusual. So, it might be worth... More

It is a historical landmark in formation of Portugal as country. Part of the Knights Templar strategy in the country formation. Deserves reading and visit.

Castelo de Leiria was both a military fortress and royal palace; the ruins and restored areas are great fun to explore, especially because it doesn't get many visitors, so your on your own. As other reviews have said the views are spectacular and the very modest entrance fee also includes discounts for seniors and kids. There are lots of nooks... More
