A highly prestigious exhibition center for the city.
Oct 2020
I visited the San Domenico Museums for the first time on the occasion of the exhibition about “Ulysses. The art and the myth ", which takes place here from February to October 2020 (but it remained closed for the national lockdown from about mid-March to mid-May).
I was unfamiliar with this vast complex of former religious buildings. In Italy there are many buildings of this kind reused for temporary exhibitions (as well as obviously for permanent museums; it is also the case of this museum), but this one in Forlì is among the largest, and it allows for exhibitions of great commitment, even in quantity.
This was also the case for this exhibition on Ulysses, very rich in items.
I am not a fond follower of temporary exhibitions, and I also had doubts about the formula of this specific exhibition: the aim to found an artistic exhibition spanning a multi-millennial period, justifying it only by a mythical figure like Ulysses, it seemed to me to be quite extrinsic.
But during the visit and after it I had to change my mind. So many cultural solicitations are received in the context of the exhibition, that in my opinion we should be grateful to the organizers for having realized it. From Etruscan sculpture to art deco, the figure of the Homeric hero has so attracted the imagination and creativity of the Western world that a trip to this exhibition has resulted in a splendid journey into our civilization.
Moreover, the high scientific level of the organizers made it possible to interpret the figure of Ulysses and the other characters who accompany him in the narrative, in an evocative and compelling way.
Overall, an exhibition center like that of the "San Domenico Museums" is truly precious, especially for Forlì which, no offense to the city, doesn't immediately come to mind as one of the most illustrious art cities in Emilia Romagna.

Unexpected and outstanding
Apr 2019
The directions to the Museum were a little unclear, but once we found it we were overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of the" Ottocento" exhibition. The museum was easy to navigate and the staff friendly and helpful. Wish we had more time to spend there.

Excellent special exhibits
Apr 2018 • Couples
The special exhibits organized here are always topnotch but after a couple of crowded visitations I avoid goiing. The problem is that tours always take place on Sundays and it's a madhouse. There's no throughway so you have to doubleback to get out and you end up shuffling past the paintings in the packed rooms. The trick would be to go on other days,I realize that.

Art Deco Exhibition...
Jun 2017 • Friends
The museum is located in an old convent, which provides glimpses of the foundations of earlier buildings through glass floor panels and worth it just for that. The exhibitions vary over time and when we visited there was an excellent art deco presentation. This is of course in keeping with the surrounding area, which offers many buildings of that era. The exhibits are of a high quality and well documented with comprehensive information cards, helpful to scholars. You pass through the museum in a single direction, exiting by a small café. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, well worth the effort as many exhibits are quite unique.

Entry fees vary but we each paid Euro 9 (senior citizen rates). You may not take bags into the museum (apart from small purses) but they can be left secured on entry. Photography inside is forbidden and there are many security personnel to ensure that this is adhered to. Plenty of parking is available adjacent to the museum (pay & display). There is a good gift shop but the café seems to have been a bit of an afterthought (there are plenty of alternatives for eating/drinking in the immediate area).

GREAT PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA SHOW
May 2016 • Couples
Wonderful Piero della Francesca show in Forli -
for scholars as well as for laypeople - only three
original Pieros but a manuscript of his treatise
on perspective as well as an architectural treatise
by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Other highlights
included the Andrea del Castagno saints, the
Duncan Grant copy of the Federico portrait, and
the original drawings of Henry Layard. A must-see
show for 15th century art historians!

Piero Della Francesca exhibition
Apr 2016
We made a special trip from Florence to see their exhibit on Piero Della Francesca. They have on loan some major works by the artist and other artists of the period and later. The exhibit tried to show how later artists and modern artists were influenced by Piero. We were not convinced - the theme read like a doctoral dissertation for an art historian and we found it contrived. Still, the Museum itself was very nice and we got to see some art we'd never seen before. We made a special trip from Florence to see their exhibit on Piero della Francesca. Piero Della Francesca exhibition
Mar 2016 • Couples
We enjoyed the exhibition which seemed well attended even on Easter morning. The exhibition space was excellent and their were audio guides explaining the various works and comparisons. There were also some excellent works of art in the rest of the museum.
