We parked near the church and found the place rather desolate. But we walked to the lighthouse and beyond that to the abandoned buildings and the views were breath-taking.

Indescribable feeling when standing there. Ordered a garroto coffee and went there solo sipping it while enjoying the view.

We had a nice outing where we enjoyed great views and had a nice stroll around. We’re not able to locate the dinosaur footprints, though.

Cabo Espichel is situated on the western coast of Portugal in Bacia Lusitânica. The land was formed during the opening of the North Atlantic in the Triassic era.

At Roman time presence on the cape was limited as the Romans considered capes sacred and a place where the gods met at night. The Greek geographer Strabo (63BC - 24AD) called the region Promontorium Barbaricum. In 1180 near Cabo Espichel the Portuguese had their first naval victory against the Moors. In the Middle Ages many pilgrims came to Cabo Espichel in devotion of Nossa Senhora da Cabo. In the early 18th century the church and accommodation for pilgrims including an aqueduct was built. Both can be seen to date.

We had a nice walk from the monastery via the lighthouse to the cape and back. It the cape we were puzzled by the remains of engines & electric generators. For a mid 20the century radar & radio post? We missed the dinosaur fossil trackways exposed in some of the now tilted Jurassic strata which form the cape's cliffs. Most fossil trackways are hard to reach.

Cape Espichel is just an hour’s drive from Libson, but its dramatic windswept cliffs and stunning ocean views are a world away from Lisbon’s hustle and bustle. The cape is celebrated as the location where an image of the Virgin Mary was discovered around 1410. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel was built in the early 1700s to house the image. The growing number of visiting pilgrims led to the construction of inns, an aqueduct, and even an opera house (now in ruins). A small white chapel, the Ermida da Memória (Chapel of Memory) sits near the cliffs where the Virgin appeared. One of the oldest lighthouses in Portugal, Farol do Cabo Espichel, is also here. Warning: weather can make all the difference in your experience. We were lucky to have a clear day to enjoy the panoramic views (lots of walking too). Cabo Espichel is breathtakingly beautiful and off the beaten path. Public transportation won’t get you here (we came on a Lisbon Riders tour).

This is a beautiful spot with many lovely views of the sea and the coast. It is made even more interesting by the existence of the ruins, as Cabo Espichel used to be a site of pilgrimage. There was also a fort there at one point. We really enjoyed walking through the ruins and the sea views.

Cabo Espichel is a cape situated on the western coast of Portugal. Stunning, no other words. Amazing views, monastery, lighthouse, walk to the abandoned house. Cabo Espichel Lighthouse is one of the oldest in the country. It was built in 1790. You have to be careful because cliffs are really very high. An attractive place that you must see. Magic place. This is a place you don't want to leave. It's worth coming here.

We spent several hours wandering around here with our family. A beautiful natural site with great views over the coastline. There are a couple of places to take a drink or bite to eat. Past the new lighthouse there are some paths leading down to the old buildings by the edge.. If you explore carefully there is a hidden path that goes past them & leads down the steep clear to the sea.
