A Castle With a View
Jul 2021 • Solo
Similar to the Moorish fortress in Sintra, the stone walls wind over the undulations in a ridge high above Sesimbra. An easy climb along the battlements provides awesome views of the town, the ocean, and the surrounding countryside.
The south side of the fortress features the ruins of several medieval buildings and a graveyard of more recent vintage.

Such a lovely spot

Really good place to visit if doing a day trip out of Lisbon. The area is really well maintained with a really lovely church inside the walls which is still in use today. The views from the walls are great and the day I visited it was extremely clear.

Three attractions in one stop
Mar 2020
A Moorish Castle dating back the 12th century, relatively well preserved/restored, could be a sufficiently attractive place to visit for residents and tourists alike. But there are also 2 other important reasons to make the excursion to the top of the hill: the visit of the church "Igreja de Santa Maria" , located within the perimeter of the Castle, and its exceptional inside decoration, as well the Sesimbra unique view from the Castle battlements. The Castle can be reached by foot, by the bravest and the most enduring, and by car. Entrance and parking are free.

Beautiful walk along the medieval walls
Dec 2019 • Couples
There isn't much surviving in this ancient castle except its walls. There is a car park, café, a charming Chapel with stunning blue mosaics and good toilets. Its free to go in, the car park is also free.
The views are breathtaking, some useful information can be found scattered around. The ground is uneven and hilly and has reverted to natural ground and bedrock and wildflowers have taken over everything, the paths are being improved but even where its not, most people should be able to move around the castle with ease. No wheal chair access except to visit the Chapel, which is straight off the car park and mostly tiled with big smooth stone slabs. Worth a visit

Nice view and piece of history

It's kind of obvious where to go, when in the town as the Castel is just there visible from all the corners of the town. Those who like castles will definitely like also this one. Is well preserved and offers really nice views.

Don't expect a princess in the tower.

We visited here with Look Around Tours out of Lisbon. I was glad to visit. The view is great. The castle grounds are preserved as befitting a historic site, and there are signs in different languages explaining what is there. They haven't spent a lot of money on upgrading the site but that may be for the best. Do go and make the walk to the top of the castle.

Must See
Sep 2019 • Couples
We were blown away by the stunning views from this castle. There’s a beautiful church on the grounds, a cafe & a cemetery in addition to the castle. It is free to walk around and there are a couple of magnificent view points from the top. We drove from the town instead of walking up to it as it was a very hot day.
