Small museum with many things to discover
Nov 2019
The museum is located in the artist's former family home and uses part of an adjacent building, too. But the curators resisted the tempation to do a gossipy exhibit w/all too personal details. Still a good impression of what a house (and garden!) looked like during the period. Good overview of Mondriaan's life and work but also several rooms for exhibits of other artists and designers. The walls of the staircase have been painted as a tribute to Mondriaan, other exhibits are for limited periods. Oh, and don't miss the Mondriaan cupcakes in the museum café. Coffee or tea is complimentary with the ticket, cupcakes and other goodies worth trying.

Lovely grounds and nice selection of early Mondrian works

We were just in town for the weekend and hadn't planned to go to Villa Mondrian but the friends who picked us up had never visited so we walked over and paid the nominal fee and really enjoyed the visit through Piet Mondrian's life as an artist, especially seeing early works we've never seen. I'm very fond of single-artist museums and collections. They really give you a chance to understand a bit about an artist's development. I'd recommend stopping by if you are in town. The coffee shop is also adorable and there's a fun gift shop.

We came across this by accident, but it was very worthwhile. Mondrian is actually on the primary school curriculum so we popped in with our 4 young sons. It's a small gallery, but actually just the right size for kids who didn't get bored at all. The staff were very keen and knowledgeable and as we went during Dutch term time we had to be place virtually to ourselves. The collection is mostly Mondrains early works, don't expect to see any Boogie Woogie style paintings but interesting nevertheless. It really shows his chameleon style of painting and how he switched styles so completely during his lifetime. It's ends with a film about De Stijl and also about some of the people he worked with such as Theo Van Duisberg. Its 9 euros each entrance but under 18s are free and this also includes a coffee in the little cafe at the end. Certainly worth a couple of hours of your time and my boys are still talking about it. Free wifi as well.

Once a local, now known around the world

In the house where Mondriaan once lived with his parents is now a pleasant and small museum. Some of the trees are still there. The museum adds to the local charm of this village.

A very worthwhile museum. Mondriaan lived in the villa during his youth and started to paint in Winterswijk and surroundings. Very interesting to see the early works and to see how he become a very fameus painter. Highly recommended.

Villa Mondriaan is a very nice museum. It gives lots of information about The early paintings of Piet Mondriaan, his family, the surroundings of his youth, his teachers and the way hè developed as a person.
By going to this museum you will understatement more of the later works of piet Mondriaan.

Small collection, but very nice amd worthwhile to visit

Piet Mondraan (Mondrian) grew up in Winterswijk, in the East of the Netherlands, close to the German border. Now the house where he lived, together with a new extension, is a museum devoted to this famous painter. His father was headmaster of a strict calvinist school, and was able to make intricate drawings for posters on which religious ideas were promoted or support expressed for the royal family.
Certainly not very artistic, still it must have stimulated young Piet to draw, too.

His uncle Frans, a professional painter of minor status, often came to Winterswijk to go painting in the fields around it, and young Piet could follow him and learn from him. Although nothing resembles the mathemetical rectangles in primary colours, for which Mondriaan became world famous, it is interesting to see his remarkable talent for naturalistic painting, already showing at the age of 18, 19.
Of all these things examples are shown in "Villa Mondriaan", partly on loan from the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, which has a sublime collection of Mondriaans.

Worthwile a visit when in the neighbourhood of Winterswijk
Jun 2013
A small, but very interesting museum in the city centre of cosy Winterswijk. The museum offers a selection of the early work of Piet Mondriaan, sometimes combined with contemporaries in the very house Mondriaan used to grow up in. Although the museum does unfortunately not accept the 'museumjaarkaart' yet, it's still worthwhile the entrance fee. Highly recommended.
