Cette ligne, longue de 9 km et exploitée depuis 1890, relie Capolago au bord du lac de Lugano (274 mètres d’altitude) à la station supérieure au Monte Generoso (1600 mètres) alors que le sommet de la montagne est situé à 1'704 mètres. Son exploitation fut interrompue de 1939 à 1941 ; Gottlieb Duttweiler (fondateur coopérative Migros) racheta la ligne et dès 1953, la traction à vapeur fit place à la traction diesel et de nos jours, la ligne est électrifiée. Il existe encore de nos jours le train à vapeur construit en 1890, le plus ancien de Suisse encore en circulation ainsi que les trains de 1950 qui plongent les voyageurs dans l’atmosphère de la Belle Epoque. Depuis Capolago, le billet adulte coûte CHF 68.- (34.- pour Abo/AG/Swiss Travel Pass, également pour les jeunes de 5 à 15 ans, enfants gratuits, 10% de réduction sur le shop en ligne). Une possibilité consiste à réduire le tarif en allant en voiture jusqu’à Bella Vista, via Mendrisio, puis via Generoso, via Lunga, station intermédiaire du train à San Nicolao et finalement parking voiture à Bella Vista avec parcomètre (route étroite et sinueuse par endroits, 11 km pour env. 30 minutes) ; il reste encore 900 m à pied dans la forêt pour 11 minutes. Depuis Bella Vista, le prix du dernier tronçon de train est alors de CHF 30.- par adulte (15.- pour abo et jeunes, enfant gratuit) ; se renseigner préalablement à la gare centrale de Capolago. Mais au sommet, la vue panoramique sur le Tessin mérite amplement le déplacement.

Beautiful experience! Go up to the Fiore di Pietra restaurant, starting from Capolago or another intermediate station. The train is narrow gauge and rack-and-pinion!

We decide to take the 10.35 train.
We arrive first imagining that there are many people. We pay for the tickets which are CHF 68.00 each for a return trip. Nothing to say except that we made the journey standing. We were good at following the queue while a group entered before us and occupied most of the seats. It's right to give special treatment to groups but what about us? Who we are? We don't count for anything I imagine since everyone was very tight and different like us they did the leg standing. Arriving at the summit around 11:00 we take a long trip and at 2:30 pm we return to the self-service restaurant. Very expensive drinks, terrible service (it seemed like we were annoying) and they don't even give you a receipt. I won't comment on the return!

Ci dispiace che la vostra esperienza non sia stata ottimale e ci auguriamo di darvi nuovamente il benvenuto per lasciare un miglior ricordo.
Il biglietto del treno acquistato non è legato ad un'orario specifico del treno e neanche ad un posto a sedere. Quando da Capolago abbiamo un treno con i posti a sedere già occupati, diamo la possibilità di scelta al cliente se decidere di salire ma stando in piedi, oppure di aspettare la corsa successiva, in modo che ognuno valuta le proprie priorità. Purtroppo non abbiamo modo di sapere in anticipo, quante persone si presenteranno a Capolago.
Per quanto riguarda il Self-Service, il nostro obiettivo é sempre quello di migliorare il nostro servizio e verificheremo l'accaduto per assicurarci che non si ripeta.

I have known the Monte Generoso Railway since I was a child (1950s). It was steam, then Diesel, then with electric drive (4/1982). Coming into operation in 1890, it was never as successful as Dr. Carlo Pasta promoter of tourism on Monte Generoso. It exists because Gottlieb Duttweiler's Migros took it over in 1941. There were hotels, not anymore. On the summit, now, a singular construction by the architect Mario Botta, with Bar and Restaurant. Spectacular is part of the panorama along the 9 km line. The shortcoming of the Monte Generoso Railway is its situation in the "deep south" of Switzerland, very far from the major tourist centres of Switzerland. grazie per aver trovato il tempo di fare un excursus storico sulla nostra unica cremagliera del Ticino. Molto probabilmente ha ragione Lei, tuttavia, noi amiamo profondamente questa destinazione e tutto quello che include tra panorami mozzafiato, boschi che regalano uno spettacolo diverso in ogni stagione, il Fiore di pietra di uno degli architetti più importanti della Svizzera, l'iconico Buffet Bellavista nella stazione intermedia. E ancora le proposte enogastronomiche legate ad un territorio ancora autentico e per questo preziosissimo.
Il nostro treno a vapore del 1890 che affascina tutti con il suo lento arrampicarsi sul monte... e molto altro ancora.

Abbiamo viaggiato a bordo del trenino a cremagliera con la famiglia. Personale davvero gentile e sorridente! Purtroppo la giornata non era delle migliori per godere della vista splendida ma è stato davvero molto suggestivo vedere il Fiore di pietra avvolto dalla nebbia.
