Built from the 16th century by the seigneurial family Les Gouffiers, the Château d'Oiron today houses the contemporary art collection Curios & Mirabilia, loosely based on the theme of the curiosity cabinet in reference to the fabulous art collection of Claude Gouffier, master of King Henry II of France's stables. Artists reinterpret an exceptional place and original décor - galleries of Renaissance wall paintings in the School of Fontainebleau style, painted panelling and carved woodwork from the 17th century. Visitors are invited to explore "curiosities" and "marvels" following in the footsteps of the Marquis de Carabas - or Puss in Boots, who, it is said, was based on Claude Gouffier. FROM 1ST JUNE TO 30 SEPTEMBER Open every day 10.30-18.30 FROM 1ST OCTOBER TO 31 MAYOpen every day 10.30-17.30 N.B Last admission to the ticket office 1h before closing time. Really interesting visit. Some fascinating contemporary exhibits displayed in a magnificent setting. No original furniture, but plenty of opulent rooms with original wall and ceiling features. Kids enjoyed it to (a great relief). Merci beaucoup.

Beautiful Chateau standing in large grounds. Can't understand why it isn't crowded. If you only have a passing interest in history or architecture it's well worth a visit. Don't forget to picnic in the lovely grounds.

A magnificent building externally. We were quite amazed that nobody had ever lived in this château. We visited the place on a Sunday as not much is normally open. The château turned out to house both modern and experimental humanist artwork. Overall the place was...More

The exhibition inside is unusual (Modern Art) and is not related to the history of the building. Be prepared for a shock. Intriguing but not to everyone's taste.
