I thought the museum would be bigger - but it's actually very small and doesn't take long to walk through it. What does take time is the guided tour - ours was in French, so I found it a little difficult to follow and it was long and detailed. The displays are well set out. The child with us enjoyed seeing the displays, but also found the guided tour long-winded - and he's french speaking. He did however enjoy the activities for kids. These are at a cost over and above the entrance fee.

Thanks for your comment, I would love the museum to be bigger but unfortunately we are a private museum of 650 m² and we would have to sell the collection to be abble to enlarge it (so we would not do that ^^). The guided tour is not available in other languages at the moment and we only have written guides in english/german/nederland. We will try to work harder and purpose an audio guide and why not learning hard to an instant translation by the future :). The activities are for 4 € more with real fossils and minerals to find, we can't contract the price but we are happy to read your satisfaction, See you soon (as soon as we hope to have an english guided tour ^^)

Great fossils museum for kids and parents
Aug 2019 • Family
This museum has opened recently, and is a great activity for kids aged 6+. The guided tour we had through the museum was led by an enthusiastic and sympathetic guide. The explanations were interesting, and some simple illustrations are understandable by kids. The exhibition is spectacular as you can see fossils from different ages and origins.
For kids you can add two more activities: a molding of a claw or a tooth of a dinosaur, and excavation of fossils and stones. In addition kids will enjoy replicas of dinosaur's skeletons, like T-rex Stan.
The museum is air-conditioned, which can be an additional argument for hot days, and it has a small outside bar.
Prices are very reasonable, a parking is just close to the museum.
A truly recommendable hidden gem!

Interesting small museum
May 2019
This small museum in Balazuc is definitely worth a visit. Really interesting displays of all sorts of fossilized animals, insects, amphibians and plants. Outside there is a huge tyrannosaurus rex - any child interested in dinosaurs would love this.

Stones and Fossils
Sep 2018 • Couples
A small but air-conditioned room, perfect visit on a hot day. Even though there was good explanations of everything in English, I found it a bit dull. Displays of fossils and stone through the ages. About 15 euros for two adults.

We are sorry to read that you did not appreciate your visit. We are a little bit disapointed reading about "good explanations of everything in English" because we probably have to work harder to tranmit the message of the room : 600 original fossils among the most outstanding of the world wich explain the story of life. This natural history museum is the result of 40 years of excavations and 6 years working to built this private place and it is really hard to read that it's just a "Stones and fossils air conditioned room". What kind of natural history museums do you usually like ? Did you find the price too expensive for two adults ? Did you ask the guide to receive more information ? We really would like to understand how to get better. If you are still in Balazuc, we would be happy to meet you and share about it. Best regards,

Informative & Thoroughly Enjoyable
Jul 2018 • Couples
A well thought out and very informative museum which does tours in English on a regular basis. We were lucky enough to be shown around by the archaeologist who discovered most of the finds, also one of the most enthusiastic & proud people I’ve ever met. The quality of the fossils were outstanding, including some very rare plant fossils in diatomite & dinosaur fossils exhibiting feather imprints.

Well worth a visit 👍

A gem
Aug 2017 • Couples
I went here after reading "A brief history of nearly everything", and it was great to see with my bare eyes so many things mentioned in the book.
This museum provides an awe-inspiring trip through the history of the cosmos, in particular of life on Earth. The guides are well-prepared, can explain things at the appropriate level for children, adults, and specialists.
Some of the rocks and fossils are truly impressive (horse, chestnut, etc.).
The guided tour lasts for about 1h, but you should stay afterward to take a closer look at your favorite fossil.
Will certainly go back to this museum.
