Visit! You won’t be sorry.
Oct 2021
While visiting Naples we decided to explore the surrounding area and were thrilled to find this amphitheater that is only rivaled. In size, by the one in Rome.

We visited on a Thursday afternoon and were virtually the only people touring. Enough of the amphitheater is left to be able to imagine just how awesome it truly was back in its heyday. Our group’s guide (not provided by the site) was instrumental in explaining the school and painting a vivid picture of the “games” held. The underground level is open and viewable unlike the Roman Colosseum. Being able to take our time ambling about and with the lack of crowds at this venue, it was a wonderful e perience and highly recommended.

Well you are in the area, take it vantage of the marvelous on site restaurant, Amico.

CLOSED MONDAYS
Aug 2021
Be aware! Closed on Mondays! I stayed one night in SM Capua Vetere just to see the teatro ( arrived late on Sunday) and left the next day...I had planned on touring it in the morning. I couldn't believe it was closed.

A Hidden Gem
Jun 2019
I've always been interested in Spartacus and knew he was from Capua. While planning a trip to Italy, I wondered if there were any sights in Capua related to him. There are! This is one. While not the arena Spartacus knew (the ruins of that arena lie partly beneath this), it is a very good example of a Roman arena. In its time it was almost as large as the Colosseum. This places has one big advantage. It is not swarmed by tourists so you can really take your time and really look around. There is access to both the arena and under ground areas that remain. Less of the arena is still there due to looting and destruction, but you get a really good idea of what it was once like. There is decent signage in Italian and limited signage in English. Parking was a little tricky, but we had no trouble finding a spot. There is also a small gladiator's museum, listed separately, and a nice modern entry building with an attached restaurant (we did not eat there, but it looked nice).

An amazing amphitheater. The second largest in the world after Rome's Coliseum. "Spartacus's High School"
Jun 2019
Arriving at the amphitheater was a bit tricky due to the lack of directional signs. What saved us was the Waze navigation software. When we arrived at the park the place was completely empty, so the place was "our private".
The place is large and expansive but little maintenance and treatment can add a lot. The whole area was covered with not taken care of wild vegetation, little pruning would have contributed to considerable improvement. The remains of the amphitheater were most impressive, especially the passages and burrows beneath the underground.
A place most recommended, especially for those who love ancient Roman history. Don't miss the visit in the adjacent Gladiators Museum. The entrance ticket is valid for both sites.

Second largest in the world after the Colosseum
Feb 2018 • Solo
The second largest in the world after the Colosseum, and one of the oldest in the roman world, it is also famous for being the starting point for Spartacus' rebellion. Unfortunately only a part of the outer ring is fully standing, the one facing south, but nonetheless it was fascinating to walk inside, alone without any other tourists, but with just the company of the guardian's two dogs following me everywhere I went. I also really enjoyed walking below ground level, where the gladiators and the beasts were kept, and also seeing some Samnite tombs from the 4th century B.C.

a true quiet gem
Sep 2018 • Couples
we have visited many anfiteatros around greece and italy but really enjoyed visiting here the most. we visited in september and practically had the place to ourselves. there is free parking right in front of the entrance so get there earlier in the day. the entrance fee is very reasonable and the staff very pleasant and helpful. we could walk around underneath and explore to our hearts content. the underground may be closed after rain so go on a nice sunny stretch in weather. this is not a huge complex but you get the real sense of what it was like during its hay day. just close your eyes a moment and listen to the crowds.

Wow, what a place to visit. We had some difficulty finding the site but once there, we were very impressed. Cost is 2.50Euros and you can stay as long as you want. We were the only ones in the grounds for 2 hours. Toured the entire area, including the tunnels below.

Closed on Mondays
Sep 2018 • Couples
We were so impressed with the Anfiteatro the first time we were there and we wanted to visit it again this year. We landed in Napoli on Monday and since it was still too early to go to our hotel, we decided to drive to Santa Maria Capua Vetere to go to the ampitheatre again. Sadly to find out that it is closed on Mondays. There is a restaurant at the location which is open, but you cannot go any further to the amphitheatre on Mondays.

Otherwise, when you go any other day of the week, you really get your money's worth of history. It is so fascinating there. Since it is off the main track of tourist attractions, there is not too much going on, either. No lines, no rush, no hectic... and you get to enjoy an ampitheatre from all sides, even underneath. We have been also to the Colosseum and feel this place is just as amazing.

Great place
Aug 2018 • Family
Visited with my family all 10 of us enjoyed the ruins even the 3year old enjoyed herself. I liked it because once we had paid the €2.50 each adult we was left alone to actually discover the ruins.
A little tip don’t forget to look for the old tombs and the samnites tombs at the side worth a look.

Capua Amphitheatre

Very impressive building and a most interesting place to visit. We had the place totally to ourselves so didn't have the hustle and bustle like the colosseum that we visited the previous week. A worthwhile place and a hidden gem.
