Super location to explore on a nice day. Lots to see, rarely gets too crowded, plenty of interest for history buffs and a nice coffee shop at the end. Recommended by me, a visitor on many occasions.

This is one of our favourite places to visit and we have been a few times now. The staff are all very welcoming and are happy to assist if you need it (we have a disabled son in a wheel chair). we love coming here and taking a slow walk to the castle theres so many gorgeous plants to see... More

We walked through the extensive and glorious gardens from the Hall (reviewed separately) to find this impressive castle. Although there weren't many information notices around, it was well worth the exploration. It doesn't take a great deal of imagination to visualise what this place might have looked like at various times of it' history. There was a place to get... More

Visited here on our route home from Scotland. Had a really nice day. It was 3 attractions in one a hall ,castle, and beautiful gardens. The hall is not furnished at all but with imagination you could visualise what it would be like. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. The castle is a walk through the gardens it also... The house is devoid of all the trappings due to it being given over the nation on the understanding it wasn't to be refurbished, just kept from deteriorating! Outside is a garden and the original castle which is got to through what looks like a quarry which was used to make the house. It has become planted and and in... More

Even in October the gardens are lovely. Very atmospheric, with quarry area and lots of shade loving plants. There are two routes ,one more suitable for disabled or if you just want a shorter route. Both lead to the castle which is magnificent. A climb to the top,up steep uneven steps, is well worth the effort as the views are amazing.

A wonderful atmospheric place with so much to enjoy. The house is modern enough to visualise people living there and the layout of the rooms, designed by the owner for his own comfort, is unusual and interesting. The castle is a ruin but so beautiful and the gardens are amazing. Go one a sunny day and it's like Journey to... More

Always enjoy a visit to old Belsay Castle - as you walk through the ruins you can see traces of former lives within these walls - steep stone staircases, old cooking range and fire places. The many rooms are worth a look and ensure that you take the staircase to the roof - lovely views over the surrounding countryside.

We never get sick of visiting Belsay Castle. The events there are always so enjoyable as is the walk through the beautiful, well kept gardens. The Knights Tournament was great last weekend, brilliant weather and lots of entertainment. We will be back soon.

The walk to Belsay castle from the Hall was wonderful through the quarry gardens. I enjoyed the castle as like the Hall it was strange and unique. There is the very old 11 th century portion with more modern additions from different periods in history. It makes it a bit of a hodge podge but worth a visit. There is... More
