Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were recommended to the chestnut when we asked about music in Birr. What a great night of live music. This pub has live Irish music sessions every Thursday and it was fabulous, 10 - 15 musicians coming together to play non stop. It was soooo good we will go back to Birr and make sure we are there for this session. The pub is comfortable and the atmosphere is great

Huge crowds but this pub was ready and prepared for the crowds. Proper rigid plastic glasses that could be reused and lots of staff on duty. Burger bar was a great idea we could smell it from the square! Good music Great atmosphere. Queues for Toilets was understandable as it was vintage week. although they ran out of toilet paper. All in all We had a great night.

Visited here a couple of times during a 2 week visit to Birr. Great service, clean, with a traditional pub feel. There also is an extended area outside where lots of young people hang out. The college students traveling with us liked this pub the best of all in Birr. Definitely the young people’s place.

Smashing drinking and social establishment.
Appropriate background melodies, astute bar service.
A choice of cosy front bar, a sittaround covered smoke/chat area in the rear, plus a neat area to the side for when live music is playing. Best pub in Birr, followed closely by Craughwells, Havertys, Molloys and Nolans....all have their own funky charm

Great people, great music, great pints. Fantastic food and nice for watching sports too. Nice and cosy during the winter with open fires, and a little bit crazy during the summer out in the slick garden area, which is a hidden gem!

I stopped here while staying in Birr and found it to be one of the most beautiful pubs I've ever been in. It's a historic Victorian pub with chestnut wood walls and bar (thus the name 'Chestnut'), and it has gold chandeliers and lots of candlelight throughout as well as tasteful paintings and furniture. I went for a pint of Guinness in the evening, and the lighting was warm and cast a golden glow over everything. I was mesmerized, it was so beautiful. The bartender was wonderful, very friendly and nice. I would have loved to go back for the music session at 10:30, but I had to be on the road early the next day. When I go back to Ireland in the spring, I'll definitely go back to the Chestnut. It's a wonderful way to end a day of touring the grounds of Birr Castle.
