The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens reflect the life and extensive wanderings of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world. The gardens pay homage to the fame he attained in Japan through his incomparable literary descriptions of the people, customs and culture of that country. The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens have a wonderful and unique story to tell. In their style and planting they contain elements of the gardening traditions of the countries and cultures traversed by Hearn during his varied life. The journey begins in a Victorian Garden to commemorate Hearn's happy childhood summers in Tramore. There is an American Garden, a Greek Garden and a traditional Japanese Tea Garden, in addition to a Stream Garden, ponds, a waterfall and an extensive woodland area. The main elements of design, in particular the use of rocks and water and the plant selection, are influenced by the tradition of a Japanese Strolling Garden.

This garden is fairly new (opened 2015) so the planting is not yet mature, but it is already a lovely space and can only improve. It commemorates the life of Lafcadio Hearn, a 19th century Greek/Irish journalist who made his career in Japan as a translator of folk tales. A fascinating story and the garden is a testament to the... More

Tramore traditionally has been a destination for people who like the hurdeygurdy of the merriers. The provision of such a precious experience would be beyond comprehension however it exists. IF you want a few tranquil hours this is the place for you. The staff are fantastic and the gardens are fantastic. Well done to all!

On our recent 25th anniversary trip, we spent our 3rd day in Waterford, then headed down to Dunmore East beaches, and then over to Tramore. While we were heading back to Kilkenny where we were staying, we found a sign for a Japanese Gardens, and fortunately stumbled on this gem a few minutes before their final tour of the day.... More

Adam, thank you for your lovely review of our gardens and we are delighted you 'stumbled' upon them. We are only a year old and just beginning to emerge as a new tourist attraction. We were delighted you were able to take in the tour and join the group. We do recommend a tour of the garden as you can... More

The garden is beautiful with lots of unique touches, even the lights are gorgeous. There are many different parts and cleverly designed pocket gardens with ponds and waterfalls. It's small enough to feel like you've seen everything and not be exhausted but there's so much in it and it's such a lovely tranquil place that you would go back again. Just... More

This is a wonderfully executed Japanese garden, created with lots of skill and attention to detail, lovely landscaping, subtle touches as every feature unfolds itself. It is useful to understand a bit about the symbolism involved in Japanese gardens to fully appreciate them but there are tours on occasion and the staff are lovely and are clearly full of enthusiasm... This is a young garden and has some natural cedar Japanese Features like the entrance and curved bridge.Well worth a visit and modest entry fees exist .It will be even more exciting in the years ahead. I am aware that his books are still usrled extensively in Japanese schools An excellent day out. Acredit to the designers and constructers

As I live in Tramore I eventually got to visit these Gardens. My daughter and I got a lovely welcome and lady was so informative. Starting with the Victoria Garden then in through this lovely Japanese Gate into a wonderland if information. It's a maze of different plants, trees. Bonsai. Just wonderful and of course the massive view of sea.... More

We went here with our two nieces. The cost of €5 per adult, (children free), included a guided tour. The tour was well worth it as it gives an insight into the layout and inspiration behind the garden and person it commemorates. As my niece says “a bit of History”. The garden itself is divided into sections that flow from... More
