The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens reflect the life and extensive wanderings of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world. The gardens pay homage to the fame he attained in Japan through his incomparable literary descriptions of the people, customs and culture of that country. The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens have a wonderful and unique story to tell. In their style and planting they contain elements of the gardening traditions of the countries and cultures traversed by Hearn during his varied life. The journey begins in a Victorian Garden to commemorate Hearn's happy childhood summers in Tramore. There is an American Garden, a Greek Garden and a traditional Japanese Tea Garden, in addition to a Stream Garden, ponds, a waterfall and an extensive woodland area. The main elements of design, in particular the use of rocks and water and the plant selection, are influenced by the tradition of a Japanese Strolling Garden.

If you just want to rush in and see a garden, you will be a bit disappointed as it is not fully developed (are gardens ever?) or mature yet. If you want to know the story, this garden is fantastic to reflect the life of an important man in Japan with Irish roots. I am a qualified garden designer myself... More

Thank you for your lovely review, yes we agree we would love to have a cafe and refreshments, but there is alot of fundraising and sponsorship needed before we can do that, In the meantime we have a self service Coffee/Tea/Hot Chocolate Machine and if the weather is dry it is nice to sit on the gardens benches and enjoy... These gardens are a joy and a real asset to Tramore. I love japenese gardens and visit them wherever I go and rate these as highly as any I've seen. The planting is beautiful, the story telling interesting and the views of surrounding Tramore set it all off. I have a mobility difficulty and staff could not have been more... More

I have visited these gardens twice - once on my own and yesterday with my wife. They are stunning - simple and stunning. Whatever the distance you travel - it will be worth it. I think they are only open a little over a year ago. I can only imagine what they will be like in 10 years when they... More

We very much appreciate your review of the garden, thank you and we are glad you enjoyed it so much and returned. We try to make it accessible as possible for Wheelchairs but unfortunately the boardwalks in the woods are not accessible. However there are some lovely views and vistas of the gardens which can be enjoyed from gardens 1-6... More

I found these gardens to be a haven of tranquility. They are beautifully laid out with good signage explaining the different areas and their meaning. I will certainly come and can recommend a visit to these gardens to any age group.

My partner is a gardening lover and won two tickets to the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens. As we were in the area we dediced to take a detour to go visit the gardens. I was a bit worried if it would be worth the 80km round trip from Dungarvan. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by how much I... More

Visited the garden today and had the benefit of a guided tour - the various rooms all have their own story and significance in the life of Lafcadio Hearn. We loved the mature trees, the dappled light - we were lucky to be there as the sun emerged after the rain - the birdsong and the overall design as well... More

We had never heard about Lafcadio Hearn before so we didn't have a clue what we were in for on arrival. The staff here are very friendly and knowledgeable about Lafcadio and his life. The gardens are a sea of tranquility in the hussle of tramore. They are only new and the planting while complete still has some room to... More

Thank you for your review, we are glad you found the gardens and have passed on this to other Tripadvisor users. We hope you can come back when the boardwalks are not so wet, the gardens looking amazing in the sunshine, but they also have a certain charm following the rain!! More

Bringing my two young daughters there on a wet summers day, we found that there was plenty in the garden to interest all ages. A beautiful and peaceful haven up from the hustle and bustle of the tramore seafront, the gardens are a wonderful place to pause. The planting is varied and beautiful. The Japanese architectural structures add enormously to... More

Garden commemorates the writer Lafcadio Hearn who visited the town as a youngster. His life story is told through a series of cleverly designed gardens which wind in and around a a hillslope, with running streams and mature trees cleverly incorporated into the narrative. The planting is very interesting and its hard to beloeve this was only started in 2014... More

We are delighted you enjoyed your visit, this time of year is a beautiful time for the gardens and considering it is just over a year since the opening of the gardens, we are so pleased with their growth and maturity. There are fantastic view over Tramore of the Gardens which is an extra bonus for visitors. More
