About
The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens reflect the life and extensive wanderings of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world. The gardens pay homage to the fame he attained in Japan through his incomparable literary descriptions of the people, customs and culture of that country. The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens have a wonderful and unique story to tell. In their style and planting they contain elements of the gardening traditions of the countries and cultures traversed by Hearn during his varied life. The journey begins in a Victorian Garden to commemorate Hearn's happy childhood summers in Tramore. There is an American Garden, a Greek Garden and a traditional Japanese Tea Garden, in addition to a Stream Garden, ponds, waterfall and an extensive woodland area. The main elements of design, in particular the use of rocks and water and the plant selection, are influenced by the tradition of a Japanese Strolling Garden.

We were pretty disappointed with the gardens. In fairness, we went in November and they still had Halloween decorations up which we thought weren't very well done. Entry was 7 Euro for an adult and 3 for a child. I'm not sure I'd go back even in a better time of year.

I brought a group of children (15) from the children’s charity I work for to the the Christmas lights. From the moment we entered it was magical, the staff could not have done more for us. Asking the children to sing them songs, offering hugs and just being truly wonderful. I honestly can’t emphasise enough how amazing the whole experience was. On the bus home they could not stop talking about “the most magical best day ever” - a direct quote from a 6 year old

We were able to walk around a carefully kept garden and read some explanatory boards.
It would have been more colourful in the summer but we really enjoyed the visit.
Also, great cake

This was a gem of a find! Husband declared it the most Japanese garden he’s seen outside Japan! So well done in a relatively short span of 8 years! Will go back again if we’re in the area!

One of the best Japanese Gardens on the planet in which we’ve had the pleasure & honour of immersing ourselves. 120 out of 100 - not to be missed, no excuses. Allied to which, the staff (mainly volunteers) are extraordinarily friendly, informative &, as one would hope, über chilled & laid back.
So proud that such fabulous gardens are in Ireland.

What a treat this garden is!! It follows a trail inspired by Lafcardio Hearn's life as a travel writer. As he spent most of the latter half of his life in Japan, this is the biggest inspiration. We visited twice, early spring and early summer (& plan another trip this month) and were amazed how the vistas changed with the different plants coming into bloom. It's small but so perfect in its details. Well worth a visit. Nice coffee, & occasional events.

We stumbled upon these gardens visiting family in Tramore. Small but beautifully planned and presented. There are also lovely views out over the coast. Would be a beautiful spot for a small wedding or romantic stroll.

There is such peace and calm in this exceptionally beautiful and well cared for Japanese garden. Despites it's small size, it is a beautiful stroll, inviting contemplation and relaxation in its many perfectly formed and well tended spaces.

Went there this morning, beautiful gardens which took me through the life of its creator. Loved the stories along the way, beautiful planting, fabulous walks, though small it's well worth a visit. Had a lovely coffee and cake before I left.
