About
The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens reflect the life and extensive wanderings of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world. The gardens pay homage to the fame he attained in Japan through his incomparable literary descriptions of the people, customs and culture of that country. The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens have a wonderful and unique story to tell. In their style and planting they contain elements of the gardening traditions of the countries and cultures traversed by Hearn during his varied life. The journey begins in a Victorian Garden to commemorate Hearn's happy childhood summers in Tramore. There is an American Garden, a Greek Garden and a traditional Japanese Tea Garden, in addition to a Stream Garden, ponds, waterfall and an extensive woodland area. The main elements of design, in particular the use of rocks and water and the plant selection, are influenced by the tradition of a Japanese Strolling Garden.

Delightful Japanese Gardens
Oct 2021
A delightful haven of tranquility! We were most impressed by the gardens and surprised by the authentic Japanese features and how extensive they are - far beyond the Japanese garden in Kildare.

Beautiful small garden overlooking Tramore Bay
Sep 2021
Although well sign posted approaching Tramore & in the town- it is still difficult to spot the actual entrance. Street parking close by is very limited, but because situated near top of a hill, well worth trying to get parking close by.
A must attraction if in Tramore, & well worth a detour if travelling from New Inn direction & going towards Cobh. We took the East Passage ferry after visiting the JFK Homestead & we wanted to avoid Waterford where we had been several times.
Garden seemed to be run by a couple of volunteers. It had a small platform with chairs which overlooked the bay, & we were able to get tea/coffee there.
The small garden was beautifully laid out, with several bamboo trees, small waterfalls ,following a one way system and it was not unduly tiring with manageable small gradients.
Plenty of quiet places where you could sit & just enjoy the tranquillity and the beautiful fauna.
Highly recommended.

Magical gardens
Aug 2021 • Couples
This is a magical place hidden away in the middle of Tramore. The gardens are so peaceful. We enjoyed reading some of the story of their founder also. The gardeners and other staff are very welcoming.

A true gem
Jun 2021
Spectacular Japanese gardens in the heart of Tramore. Stunningly planted and laid out. Each garden represents part of Lafcadio Hearns' life, a writer who called Dublin and Tramore home, who went on to have a global life ending up settling in Japan. He opened up the culture of Japan to the west, illustrating and interpreting for us the Japanese way of life. It is a mystical, living, breathing group of gardens that inspires one to slow down, relax and contemplate life while lauding this wonderful writer and Irish man.
