About
Youghal, Co. Cork is a unique place in Ireland’s Ancient East with miles of sandy beach and a rich medieval history. Youghal Clock Gate Tower is the most visible landmark in the centre of Youghal’s Main Street and is newly opened for 2017 as a visitor attraction. Although built in 1777 as a gaol, this story spans 700 years of history. Visit is by way of a guided tour (allow 1 hour) with costumed ‘storytellers’ over 4 floors. Each floor depicts a different era in time and includes a medieval merchant’s dwelling, an 18th Century Gaol, a ‘time keeping floor’ and a former family home. Hear stories of pain, tragedy and rebellion, but also stories of love, friendship and generosity throughout this tour.

I first visited the clock tower in 1978 And went back in 2018 and 2022. There has been some amazing work done by everyone involved.
Shirley the tour guide really goes that extra mile with both Adults and children. Well worth a visit and I will be boing back up the tower next year.

Excellent guide, a rich variety of info with different topics going back hundreds of years: the merchant's store, the prison, the clock and the best surprise was the lovely video of John McGrath who grew up in the tower during the 1950's.

Fantastic tour of the Clock Tower yesterday with Guide Ann Marie. She was excellent with lots of interesting history of the tower and capped with the video at the end, the fabulous clock and in reaching the top, great views of Youghal. Will be recommending it to all my friends.

Fantastic tour of the Clockgate which we happened upon by accident when we met Shirley in the Heritage Centre close by. Shirley is an amazing tour guide. Her passion for history was so engaging as she weaved through the detail of centuries conveying the imagery and emotions of the times. We came away with a new perspective on Youghal and the richness of its history. We purchased a combo ticket which also included the St Marys Collegiate Church audio tour which was excellent and rounded off a great day in this historic town.

Thank you so much Martin for taking the time to review our wonderful attractions. We will pass on your warm comments also to Shirley! You are right, the combo ticket is a wonderful way to see the two 'must see' visitor attractions in the town. We hope to see you again soon in Youghal!

Shirley gave a fascinating and totally enjoyable guided tour. She used a mix of multimedia elements, well-thought out displays, amazing views (from the roof) but best of all are her great stories which bring the history to life. And there's a huge amount of history in Youghal and this building. Enjoy this must-do attraction. Tip - get a combined ticket with St Mary's Church.

We visited the clockgate in October and it was fantastic. We could have talked to our tour guide, Shirley, for hours. She had so much historical information to tell and was so charismatic. My boyfriend in particular loved the view from the top and the workings of the clock. I loved the jail segment of the tour and all Shirley's historical information of the town. My being a local and my boyfriend being from Canada she did great with explaining stories from different perspectives. Thoroughly recommed this tour.

I was the first visitor to enter the clock tower after the COVID19 lockdown - whoohoo! The tour guide Shirley gave an excellent tour which must have been a challenge after such a long break. But if she forgot any facts, I could't tell; she seemed absolutely on top of her game and made it very interesting and entertaining.
The video with "the last survivor" (trying not to give too much away here) was very interesting and really priceless. It's amazing to see how much history is crammed into such little floor space.
And absolute must when in Youghal!
