About
Youghal, Co. Cork is a unique place in Ireland’s Ancient East with miles of sandy beach and a rich medieval history. Youghal Clock Gate Tower is the most visible landmark in the centre of Youghal’s Main Street and is newly opened for 2017 as a visitor attraction. Although built in 1777 as a gaol, this story spans 700 years of history. Visit is by way of a guided tour (allow 1 hour) with costumed ‘storytellers’ over 4 floors. Each floor depicts a different era in time and includes a medieval merchant’s dwelling, an 18th Century Gaol, a ‘time keeping floor’ and a former family home. Hear stories of pain, tragedy and rebellion, but also stories of love, friendship and generosity throughout this tour.

    Very interesting tour!
The start of the tour was a bit delayed as the group before us ran into our start time but the tour was worth the wait and Ann Marie was an amazing tour guide. She spoke very clearly, was very interesting and knowledgeable. She took nice pictures of us and was very kind and accommodating. The views from the top of the tower were lovely too!
Thank you so much for taking the time to review us! I'm sorry the tour was delayed..this rarely happens, but it sounds like Ann Marie made up for the inconvenience of your delay. It's great to get such positive feedback from our visitors on the tour and our guides. Ann Marie is a wonderful asset, as are all of our guides. Hope you got a good day to view the town from the top of the tower!

    Such an amazing attraction
We had the pleasure of experiencing the Clock Tower this evening as a family. Our kids are 5 & 7 and very lively ! I worried that they may be bored on this tour but I couldn’t have been more wrong. They were mesmerised by it. Dorthy, our tour guide, painted vivid images of life in the town and tower as we rose up through each floor. With each floor revealing itself with a new wonder. The 360 degree view at the top was gorgeous especially on a clear evening. What an amazing attraction. I recommend this tour so much. Don’t miss out. It’s worth it.

The family connections. The location. The views. The price. The rather modern interpretation of the site.

The Clock Gate Tower is a wonderful historic location with an excellent guided tour. You can learn about the medieval town, the jail and inmates. The mechanical clock on display gives a real sense of the old clock and the display with the McGrath family's kitchen evokes nostalgia. Great views from the top. Overall one of the best tours thanks to the very I informative guide, Shirley. Thank you.

Such a majestic and beautiful building towering over Main Street Youghal. I'd love to leave a more meaningful review but I appear to have been unlucky. I was there in mid February and went back a few times during the day and each time the steps were chained off as if closed. On my third attempt I saw a sign up saying a tour was ongoing.
So perhaps you have to book ahead? My fault then as I didn't. Or perhaps I was unlucky with my timing.
Anyway, it's an excuse to go back to Youghal...but I'll be calling ahead next time!
Still though, I'm glad I saw the outside of such an enerable, elegant structure with so much history and character.

Excellent guide, a rich variety of info with different topics going back hundreds of years: the merchant's store, the prison, the clock and the best surprise was the lovely video of John McGrath who grew up in the tower during the 1950's.
