About
Overview: The Cavan Adventure Centre is located within the ROI side of the UNESCO Marble Arch Caves Global GeoPark. The beautiful lowlands were formed by glacial erosion in the last ice age and has since become home to a wide and varied diversity of wildlife, in particular waterbirds and raptors. The abundance of such spices has also given the area status as a bird sanctuary. The area is also of significant importance to the heritage of the region. The island castle of Cloughoughter, constructed in the 13th century (unknown but aprox) is located 3km from our Centre and once represented the stronghold of the O'Rourke clan in the old Kingdom of Brefini. This was before being taken over by the Anglo-Norman William Gorm de Lacy when they wrestled control of the region. At the Centre we promote the regions heritage, culture and unique landscape. We achieve this by engaging the public, schools and tourists in fun, interesting and active ways. We promote outdoor activities, education, conse

I visited Ireland with the intent to learn about my family ancestry and where my roots originated. I booked the tour to see the Clough Oughter Castle because of its rich history. Upon arrival to the Cavan Adventure Centre Lisa greeted me and was very pleasant and very welcoming. Sean and Fergal took me on the tour and explained the history of the entire area and the castle as well as the conservation efforts in place. I learned more than I could have imagined and will remember my visit always. Sean and Fergal couldn’t have been nicer or more knowledgeable. Thank you all for an amazing and unforgettable experience. I definitely felt closer to my family’s past after the visit.

As soon as we arrived the staff went out of their way to help our family who had never visited before. We decided to take out a canoe and make our way out on Lough Oughter, after a rocky start for us inexperienced kayakers we got going and spent a really enjoyable hour or so taking our time checking out the stunning views and scenery before arriving at the island where you can tie up the canoe and explore cloughoughter castle before heading back. The scenery is fabulous the trip was so memorable and the staff so friendly and accomodating. They ensured we had everything we needed with wet suits even a wet bag for valuables etc before setting off. We had a picnic before heading out as well and they have lovely picnic area and a great little tuck shop which we visited for some well earned snacks after all the rowing. We did see the inflatable obstacle course also on the other side of the Lough but our son was a bit young for it but it looks epic and we will definitely be back.

We recently visited Cavan for a family event and booked a boat and kayak trip to the Clough Oughter Castle ruins on Lough Oughter.
Michael and Noel were our hosts on the boat while the rest of the group kayaked to the island. Despite the heavy showers, at the beginning and end, the trip was really great and Michael had a wealth of knowledge on the history of the castle and area in general. We were a large group about ~10 on the boat and ~12 kayaking, once we returned they couldn’t do enough to get us teas and shelter in their viewing area where the rest of the group met us afterwards. The kids really enjoyed it despite the weather and we ended drying off in some atypical Irish sunshine!

The whole experience was amazing. staff were so friendly and helpful. we did get lost a few times on the way back after taking a wrong turn🤣 but we just rang the centre and they helped us get back onto the right path. The views were amazing even on a rainy day and the castle was so beautiful, we didn’t get onto the island because it was flooded but definitely will be back again to explore the island!

On Friday 10th August we travelled over to the Cavan Adventure Centre from Monaghan and arrived mid-afternoon. The owner and the staff were very welcoming and kitted us out with wetsuits, and life-jackets.They gave us a special waterproof bag for our belongings and a waterproof box for our mobile. They clearly explained the 3 hour return trip to the castle and then took us to the double kayaks, which we paddled over to the island. It was an absolutely incredible experience and one that we will all shall treasure. Well done Cavan Adventure Centre for being the ‘icing on the cake’, on what was an incredible holiday in Ireland!
