About
Open seasonally, Tropical World at Alcorn’s, Letterkenny, has best be described by patrons as both “Donegal’s hidden gem” and the “one must see attraction to visit in Donegal”. Tropical World is a fully licensed zoo with an astonishing array of animals, from a dazzling display of butterflies to the world’s smallest monkeys alike. The incredible butterfly house is still the star attraction, with hundreds of amazing tropical butterflies in free-flight around you as you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the rainforest. Leave Letterkenny’s own slice of the Amazon and you’re greeted by the sounds from the tree topped canopies, with beautiful birds of all shapes and sizes from around the globe calling you on. Only after you reach the reptile house can you begin to meet the lemurs and miniature primates that call Tropical World home, along with owls, prairie dogs, our family of Meerkats.

    Hidden Gem
What a little hidden gem. Loads of parking, a tea rooms, florets and garden centre too. All the animals where kept so well and their enclosures where great. I've never seen such inquisitive monkeys. The staff where friendly and the place was so clean. Walking through the butterflies was amazing. There is a small shop for toys and drinks and a seating area where you can bring a picnic. There is also a large place area which looked great. I'd definitely recommend and I will definitely go back.

Annual trip to Tropical World - Keeps Getting Better
Annual family visit to Tropical World and it keeps expanding and getting better. Fantastic day out. Great food in the cafe before seeing all the animals and exotic creatures. Finishing off in the covered playground is always a hit with our children.

Hidden gem. Leave plenty of time.
This was a wee gem of a place. We (11, 13 and 14 year old boys and their dad) planned a short trip as we had another activity planned in Letterkenny, and expected to see a few animals hopefully well cared for. It was so much more, from the tropical birds and butterflies, the lizards and snakes and owls and, our favourites, so many little monkeys and meerkats. The marmosets were wonderful, would go back just to see them again. Give yourself at least a couple of hours so as not to miss anything.

7 year old had a great time
Very good for kids up to 12, Playground, occasional model dinosaurs and very friendly staff. Okay, it's not London zoo, but has a decent variety of animals. Looks like they've invested in breeding programmes recently too. It isn't world class but it is a good solid venue with kids especially on a wet day

    Excellent 'wet day' activity!
Great selection of birds, butterflies and other animals. Very clean and well maintained. Excellent activity for a wet day especially if you have children as most of the exhibits are under cover. Tip tip, arrive early as the carpark was at capacity when we were leaving at 1pm.

    Unexpected gem!
Fantastic place! Their www doesn’t do it justice! Large variety of animals including insects, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, birds, monkeys, lemurs and ducks. Enclosures are well enriched with lots of natural planting, animals all appear healthy and active. Some beautiful varieties of butterflies in the dense and humid butterfly garden. Beautiful birds indoors and out. Mostly under cover. Lots of indoor eating areas to bring your picnic to. Really well signposted with lots of educational information. Very clean everywhere, even toilets. Very impressed!

    Excellent
I loved the butterfly room but it was all amazing. The staff are friendly and helpful, the layout excellent and interesting with plenty of eating areas throughout. Make a day of it with a picnic. Plenty to see and including a soft play area. Educational as well. They impressed me with the fact it runs on 70 per cent green energy.

    Lovely place
Tropical World is a lovely day out, its reasonably priced with friendly staff and a great variety of animals. The animals in general seemed well cared for and the cages and enclosures were well kept. My only complaint is about the 'bug' area. Some of the tanks are far too small for the creatures in them, 2 or 3 of the lizards were as long as their tank was wide, and some of them had fake plants in them, just not a very natural environment and not enough space for them to have any quality of life. Its a shame, as overall it's a terrific place.

    Great experience
A lovely afternoon spent seeing a wide variety of animals. Our little boy loved seeing everything and the staff we encountered on our visit were all lovely and friendly. Very enthusiastic about their work and told us all about what the animals eat. Loved all the signs dotted around with random facts - some really interesting things to learn.

    What a lovely place!
We took our 2 year old recently for a day out whilst visiting on holiday. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, really lovely and helpful. Lots to see, our little one loved the butterflies and Milo the cockatoo who was chatting away to us saying hello/goodbye/what's the craic? The softplay/sand section is also great and full of fun equipment. A great day out followed by a trip to the cafe. Would love to visit again!

You must visit here if you are in Donegal on your holidays! A hidden gem is how someone described it and they are so right! This is a fantastic day out👌The facilities are excellent and so well kept, the animals, birds, insects and dinosaur display are fabulous! What struck us the most was how informative and educational the zoo is in a fun and friendly way, young and old, which is what our group was made up of, learned so much! The fun facts along the walkways are brilliant 👏

We also commented on the value for money; in a country where prices are ridiculously hitting the roof, this lovely place has very reasonable price entry for such a great experience and a gift shop that will not have you crying at the till, in fact it's so well priced and catering for all budgets that all 8 of the kids in our group left in high spirits with items from the gift shop in hand!

Having lunch in the fantastic cafe there, Thyme Out, is a must so factor that in to your time schedule, spotlessly clean, super staff who were so patient with our group of 13 and the most delicious food😋No wonder there were queues out the door!!

All in all a great spot to visit for both young and old, we will certainly be telling anyone we know heading to Donegal to make it their business to get there! Keep up the great work Tropical World 👏

A really great find. Truly not to be missed. There are so many different exotic birds to see. The little monkeys are so cute. The coffee shop is also not to be missed.
