Newtown Castle is a beautifully restored 16th century cylindrical fortified tower house - one of only few such buildings in Ireland. Having lain derelict for many years, the castle's restoration began in 1994, completed in time for the opening of the Burren College of Art in August of that year.

Newtown Castle is once again a vibrant building in daily use, central to the artistic, cultural and educational life of the Burren.

It is open free of charge to the public on week days.

Newtown Castle is also available for wedding ceremonies, small private functions or company events.

Great tower house

This is one of the many historic and beautiful sights in Ballyvaughn. It's an impressive tower house, worth a stop.

My husband and I came to Ireland this past May for our destination wedding. We did a lot of researching before we landed on Newtown Castle for our ceremony. We had the castle's first outdoor wedding using the courtyard area in front of the tower, and it turned out BEAUTIFUL. We couldn't have been happier with our choice of locations.... More

Just off of the N67 and north of Corkscrew Hill is a unique tower house (which is saying a great deal since there are over 3000 tower houses in Ireland) at the foot of a grand hill in the Burren. Not only is Newtown Castle one of 30 round tower houses in Ireland, it is the only one in the... More

Lovely castle/tower to explore. If you are looking for a fairly quick up close view of a castle/tower - this is a great stop. Honor system for donations. You can walk through the entire structure (4 floors). Great find!

Would be too easy to miss this in a lovely quiet location in the Burren. Amazing views -and it's free to visit the tower. The cafe was about to close at 2pm but the staff welcomed us and served a most delicious sweet potato and celery soup. We enjoyed taking up their invitation to see the graduate exhibition.

A short walk from our guesthouse. Made our own way in and up the stairs. Nice to see the honesty system still applies and works. Allowed a real feel for life in times past.

Well worth the stop to take a look at this. It is not huge but you can go inside, climb the stairs and go up into the tower, four stories if I remember correctly, for some nice views of the Burren. Interesting to see how people lived back then. My reason for going, I photographed a wedding there of an... More

We found this by accident on a driving trip in Clare and Kerry and it is definitely worth a quick visit. The castle itself is very small but has been lovingly renovated and has real atmosphere. It feels really cosy and yet spooky at the same time, it would be such a lovely venue for a candle lit classical concert.... More

We stumbled upon here while driving around Burren area. Great find -- we thoroughly enjoyed the ancient ruins and the sweeping views it offers of the area.
