About
Newtown Castle is a beautifully restored 16th century cylindrical fortified tower house - one of only few such buildings in Ireland. Having lain derelict for many years, the castle's restoration began in 1994, completed in time for the opening of the Burren College of Art in August of that year. Newtown Castle is once again a vibrant building in daily use, central to the artistic, cultural and educational life of the Burren. It is open free of charge to the public on week days. Newtown Castle is also available for wedding ceremonies, small private functions or company events.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My son got married here. It was a beautiful intimate ceremony. The grounds are kept very clean. Plenty of parking.

We visited this castle in an out of the way location because I had seen it on TripAdvisor. It is in a location that is easily accessible with a good parking lot. It is attached however, to an art school. There is a gallery for the artists. Sadly, we could not go in the castle because the door lock was acting up and the caretaker was afraid to unlock it for fear it wouldn't work the wedding the next day. But we did talk to a gentleman who was from the States who is writing a book about the location. He shared some great information about the renovation of the castle and its location.

This16th century restored cylindrical castle tower is in the grounds of the Burren School of Arts and was open 9-5 and free. You can walk to the top for a fine view of the countryside. Toilet. Café.

Ireland has many beautiful castles and so much history this was just one of many worth a stop. No trip to Ireland is complete without a few castles tours this one is nice but not as complete as some but still a good visit into the past.

When we booked The Waters for a night in Galway's area, we didn't know there was the Newtown Castle towers so close to it.
The tower - built apart from the castle's building nowadays completely rebuilt - keeps a big part of Middle Ages constructions, at least the first and second floors, showing the original floors construction.
So it was a top interesting visit, that takes less than 30' even with children.

We doubled back north from the caves to stop in here and it did not dissapoint. We went to the top of this restored tower, our five year old loved it (so did the grown-ups). The stairs are a bit precarious, but it really gives some depth to the reality that these were not made for comfort but purpose built.
If you are nearby, this is a great stop in a beautiful valley. The castle is free to tour and is attached to the coolest little arts school, where students proudly display their wonderfull work- so dont miss the opportunity to walk the the gallery and work spaces to see the creative minds at work.

Just not what I expected but we were doing a drive by anyway. It is part of a college I would not go out of my way to see it again. However near gleninagh castle...that is worth it!

Unfortunately we were there on a Sunday so the grouds proper was closed, but we took some great pictures from the outside. The Burren College of Art has a gallery and a cafe on site (again closed for Sunday).
Certainly worth a stop!

A nice tower in peaceful surroundings that is a pleasant place to stop if nearby. The restoration is well done. Unfortunately the coffee shop was closed when we visited due to a corporate function.
